Is Toney the GOAT UM Freshman?

Man I love Toney but duke was on another level freshman year. He literally carried the Univerity on his back and he suffered for it. Junior year duke was an athletically diminished version of the freshman phenom. But the fact that we are having this conversation shows us what we have in Toney. Praying we keep him healthy and let’s enjoy our generational gift fellas.

For those who forgot:

Toney is Duke at WR

Man Duke was amazing. I just wish we had better teams around him. The entire college world would have reacted to him like they are reacting to Toney.

To me the most underrated part of Toney's greatness is his ability to be physical without the defense ever getting a clean shot on him.

He never ducks contact when getting extra yardage but always seems to avoid the big hit.

That kid is a generational talent.

Amazing.

I saw him in person earlier in the year and noted a fairly slight build. I thought the wear and tear of a season would grind on him and he’d fade a little. But it was the opposite. He somehow got better and became the focal point of the offense. So, yes. What a player.

Canes fans love the rear view mirror. Eyes forward and appreciate what you’re seeing now. There has never been a Freshman season like Toney’s.

I saw Duke and Toney both play in high school and win state championships, and then play their freshmen year as a Cane.

If the CIS police will permit, I have two goats right now.

It’s not just the numbers or the big plays. It’s that our entire offense runs through Malachi Toney. As the season has gone on and the pressure has ramped up, we’ve put more and more on this kid’s plate and he continues to eat every bit. He does everything well and doesn’t make freshman mistakes. He’s the smartest football player on the team and he should be in high school still. Most freshman skill players have packages and limited responsibilities. Toney plays almost every snap on offense. He lines up at running back. He throws the ball so well that other teams HAVE to game plan for the option pass. He returns punts. He picks up ladies that he accidentally runs over on the sideline and makes sure they’re ok.

Other freshmen have had great seasons and made exciting plays but no other true freshman in UM history (ok I only know back to the 80’s) has lead the amount of responsibility this kid has.

Yeah his balance and spatial/situational awareness is alien level. It seems like a wild lucky fluke each time, but then he just keeps doing it every other play lmao.

I would argue most productive, most definitely.

Most talented? That's for others. But his talent is close to the top spot and he took full advantage of his chance. Role model for everyone else.
