Is Toney the GOAT UM Freshman?

I don’t know that I’m worried about K-State specifically, but everyone has the same $20.5 million, right? And we’ve got a lot of players to pay with that budget, and a lot of incoming players too. It’s not crazy to worry about a smaller school that doesn’t have a lot of stars and might could offer a large portion of their budget to a guy like Mali to try to steal him away.

It’s just message board conjecture, sure. But it’s also hoping that we have a solid plan in place with the NIL and other opportunities so that we can hold on to our key players. I saw something earlier about how Auburn is moving a home game to Atlanta so that they can maximize additional NIL opportunities for their players and get around the $20.5MM limit. We need to be doing things as well that put us in a position to get our players as many opportunities as possible.
The 20.5 won’t limit NIL from outside sources. For example, let’s say a business in or near Miami wants to pay Toney 1 million for some advertising. That will always be separate. And if the NCAA tries to prevent this, the players will sue.
Without collective bargaining in place, there is no method to constitutionally limit compensation. Schools can agree on what they will pay, but they can’t limit outside opportunities.
Think of it like pro sports. There are salary caps which limits what teams can pay. But Michael Jordan always made more from Nike than what the Bulls paid him.

Yes, I’m aware (I’m also aware that I didn’t explain that well in my post!), but your explanation is awesome, so thank you.

I think what I was trying to say before my brain short-circuited on me was just that the playing field is leveled these days. A school like K-State wouldn’t have traditionally seemed like a threat to us, but times have changed so we need to stay ahead of the game or we could lose a player like Toney. That’s all.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Every school has a shot depending on how they want to allocate their 20.5. Which means every school can be a threat, even KSU.

Duke has a slight edge IMO but it’s razor thin.

Was looking up his stats in 12’ to combine with the impact I remember him having every game. 7 YPC with 10 TD’s, 10 YPC with a TD, 2 KO return touchdowns, and even threw for one as well.

I know the teams had some reasonable pieces while he was here. But IMO we lose another 5-6 games at least during his tenure if he wasn’t here. He was a gem.
I’m changing my vote to Toney. He’s been that good and that important

Duke probably number 1 for me. I was too young to see a Ray Lewis in a live game just highlights. I was surprised me the most about Tony is his build. In hs he looked tiny. He doesn’t look that small as a freshman.

Malachi Toney had 970 yards receiving and 7 receiving TDs, 89 rushing yards and 1 rushing TD and 82 yards passing and 2 passing TDs.

As a freshman, Duke Johnson had 947 yards rushing and 10 rushing TDs, 221 yards receiving and 1 receiving TD, 2 kick return TDS and 1 passing TD.

Both were great as freshmen. Toney has another game or maybe more if the Canes slide into the CFP.

Man I love Toney but duke was on another level freshman year. He literally carried the Univerity on his back and he suffered for it. Junior year duke was an athletically diminished version of the freshman phenom. But the fact that we are having this conversation shows us what we have in Toney. Praying we keep him healthy and let’s enjoy our generational gift fellas.

For those who forgot:

Toney is Duke at WR

Yes. I’ll go a step further and say he’s the single most impactful player (non QB), we’ve had in a long time.

In the last decade he’s the 2nd most impactful single player behind Cam.
I’m not going to minimize Duke to elevate Mali. What I don’t understand in the stat comparisons is leaving out when and how Mali made his impact. We’re talking about his best games against our biggest rivals and the best teams we played. I’m genuinely surprised this is a debate.

A winning offense was basically created *around* the kid. Most good things that happened during the end of year run were predicated off his alignment, motion, or direct touch. He was THE impact player in a win against a top 10 and a top 25 team. And, AT Doak.

I mean, stats are nice, and his aren’t even lagging far behind, but are we watching the games?
