Is Sam Howell actually good?

Pope and Haley look like little kids playing with adults. Like they are scared. Pope is worse than. Watch plays. He breaks routes. Step out of bounds. It’s clumsy. Can’t hold onto the ball. He’s just not made for this level. He’s a junior and it’s still not clicking.
Miami has had more than just a deployment (Enos) issue at WR. Acquisition was obviously off a little, but the development both S&C and by the position coaches has been off, too. Redding looks like a grown man vs the other 3.

he also doesnt have harey and pope dropping passes, tripping over their own feet, breaking routes, and running out of bounds
UNC's WR's are really young or coming from a 2-9 program. Sometimes a QB can make WR's look good, too. Howell throws a much prettier ball than King, Williams, or Perry. not saying it's King's fault these boneheads suck, but QB's with timing, anticipation and spiral/trajectory don't hurt WR's numbers either

Neither looks like they been in the weight room much. Both are about the same size they first reported to Maimi.

He was phenomenal for a true freshman last year. The natural inclination would be that he improves yearly and if that's the case, he will end up being a great quarterback. There are tons of stories about kids who lit it up as freshman or sophomores and then kind of tailed off after that so it's a tough call to make right now.

Howell has a decent supporting cast. That helps. Like @DTP said, has he peaked or will he continue to improve?

Also, not everything is about Pope and Harley.

When you put up numbers like Howell did, the comparables are with people who excelled in college and are now playing in the NFL.

In Sam Howells case, its still too early to know if his performance last year was an outlier, baseline or ceiling for performance.

Some people shine as true freshmen and never look back and then you have people who flash and crash.

The jury is still out on Sam Howell but no doubt, he is good.

Yup. This.

Not to mention, the phrase "sophomore slump" exists for a reason.

Wouldn't be the first time a solid freshmen campaign was followed up by a sub-par year two.

Heels were a 7-6 squad last year that got way too much hype for beating Miami early and hanging tough with Clemson.

All this, "three game win-streak to end the season"—they beat Mercer, North Carolina State and Temple, in a bowl game.

Lost to Wake Forest, Appalachian State, Virginia Tech, Virginia and Pittsburgh, too.

Too soon to tell if he's going to have a "sophomore slump" or not. Every DC now knows all his capabilities and limits. That should make it easier for them to game plan against. I don't think Baker had any idea Howell could tear us apart like he did in our game last year, so I would hope we are much more prepared now that he has a body of work to study.

The real question is will Howell just be so good that it doesn't matter how much DCs know his tells and tendencies? Like OP, I'm not ready to declare him the next Andrew Luck or Trevor Lawrence just yet.

Just think about this for a second.

both Harley and wiggins have started a bunch of games and been the main group of receivers since 2018 right?

pope as a junior has only just started his 3rd game of his career and is making progress as a receiver every game. He’s outperformed both wiggins and pope despite limited experience compared to the other 2. Let this kid gain his confidence man and stop trying to write players off so early

Thank you. All offseason people were hyping them up like they were some juggernaut. People here talking about Mack Brown, da GAWWWW. They were a 4th and 17 conversion away from being 6-7 last year.

Just for poetic justice, I hope we convert a 4th and 17 on the first drive of the game, and then proceed run a train on them after that

System. It's more about Phil (OC), IMO. Most of the work and reading of defenses is put on the WRs. Option routes. The WRs are free to create a bit which is why they have them wide open deep balls.

Doesn't mean the kid doesn't have **** good tools. He does. But Phil's system is QB friendly. Look at his previous stops.

Was unimpressed with Howell against them cuse

Curious to see how we atone for last years **** show and how we defend him

He's good but the term "good" on the college level can have a wide array of meanings. Do I fear him? No.

Let’s hope, otherwise it’s the system he’s running that is responsible for it.
I’d much rather it be player dependent. Those come and go.

Harley too often seems to be playing down to his size and I swear to God that you'd think Pope is 5'10" max sometimes just by the way he manages his body or engages with DBs.

I haven't watched him this year, but I was quite impressed with him last year, particularly as a freshman.

Separately, wasn't he committed to FSU at one point? Between him and missing on Jeff Sims, they ought to be kicking themselves. Both guys would be massive upgrades over their current roster and would likely have that program in a much different direction.
