Obviously we have to win the game, but this is also a massive chance to make it difficult for the committee to justify ranking Notre Dame so far ahead of us. Ostensibly, the committee weighs results against common opponents (although supposedly not margin of victory but given their affinity for the eye test so far...) and Notre Dame pasted this team less than a month ago.
The offense seems to be legit:
- CJ Bailey is coming into his own and I would very much prefer him over LaNorris Sellers in the portal if we are picking between the two.
- Terrell Anderson is the big play guy and he is good. Noah Rogers is the possession guy and he is solid if unspectacular. Teddy Hoffman is the third receiver who is on the rise. A Florida kid that I sorta wish we had recruited.
- The guy who makes me the most nervous is the tight end, Justin Joly. He is one of the five best in the country (maybe behind only Fall Camp Elija Lofton) and a potential matchup nightmare for most of our DBs and certainly our linebackers in space. Maybe
We remain one of the best run-stopping defenses in the entire country and NC State's offensive line is nothing special, so we should be able to stop the run without too much stress, but I expect Bailey to light us up in the pass game. Think SMU where the run game was a complete non-factor but Jennings threw for a career-high.
I am nervous.
Their rush defense is okay, not that that matters since we can't even run the ball effectively against ******* Syracuse. But the pass defense is exceptionally terrible.
THEY ARE RANKED 135TH IN THE COUNTRY IN PASSING YARDS ALLOWED. THAT IS SECOND-WORST IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. The only team that is worse? SMU. Kill me now.
I really couldn't be more nervous for this game. Bailey will obviously be pumped up for this one. NC State is a carbon-copy statistically to SMU and while Dave Doeren isn't the offensive guru that Lashlee is, he is a good coach who will have his guys ready to play.
Can we PLEASE get out to a fast start? Maybe try some play-action? Get the tight ends involved? Okay let's not get crazy.
