It’s a misleading question, imo. Head coaches have ultimate authority, but if they run around regularly second guessing their position coaches on substitutions during games, they’re going to fail.HC has final say over EVERYTHING. You guys think position coaches can overrule a HC? Come on.
What they need to do is be prepared, and part of that is making sure their assistants are on the same page as them regarding lineup and substitution patterns. You do it before the game, hopefully not during, unless it’s a quarterback change or someone really messed up.
As for ‘favorites‘ (the post you responded to asked about them), it’s the wrong term. Maybe some kids are better kids, practice better, follow instructions better. That’s sports, no problem liking the kids who are on board. But the issue is usually the coach’s bias, not his favoritism. Playing frosh is scary. Especially when the HC is worried for his job. Heck, he might get criticized by in the media!
