Is College Football Down?

Guess ESPN thinks Georgia vs. the Lady Vols would make for a better matchup. So disrespectful.

In another thread MotorcityCane brought up a good point that OSU might not be tested until the B1G Champ Game or Playoffs.

(Excluding Bad performances) You could say the same for Clemson, UGA and OU.

Bama still has tough (on paper) matchups vs LSU and AU.

It just feels like the middle class of college football is way down right now.

History suggest that’s one if not two
Of these teams will slip up. But each one will be favorites in all of their remaining games and if they handle business We could have 5 undefeated teams headed into championship weekend.

How in the world do you include UGA in that scenario?

They played Notre Dame

They still play Florida, Missouri, @ Auburn and Tex A&M......

I’ve paid less attention to college football this year than any year I can remember.

Many games are very boring. Like mentioned already the top teams can buy players and keep elite talent from getting spread out.

You basically have:

Clemson
Alabama
UGA
Ohio state

As IMO top 4-

Then you have

OU
LSU
Auburn

Then maybe Wisconsin. Realistically Auburn may be a top 5 team, but their schedule will catch up to them. They still have @Bama, LSU, @UF, UGA. Wisconsin can’t beat the top top teams because they are too 1 dimensional.

So in essence you get the same teams for the most part every year. They are protected by the NCAA, and its boring.

OP, you knocked college football down.

Why don't you try knockin' me down now?

PSU, Wiscy, Ohio State all play each other this year. LSU finally looks to be able to compete with Baga. Oklahoma may have finally figured out their defense. Clemson may be upset this year.

This ain't the year to complain about CFB.

Mark this down, LSU changing their offense to a wide open scheme is going to give Alabama fits. They realized they weren't going to out smashmouth them

At this stage The quietly 5-0 Wake Forest Demon Deacons might roll into Clemson Undefeated at 9-0.

That game may be a UNC style dog fight.

Wake is a completely different team at home. If Clemson was going there, maybe—but with that game at Clemson, Tigers will be just fine.

Yes, it’s the protected class of cheaters and then everyone else. The massive public land grant universities with rabid fan bases willing to do whatever it takes to win, backed by an NCAA with their self interest aligned with those same universities, leaves the rest of CFB out in the cold, and no one in the media cares to discuss the elephant in the room.
g8rh...............agreed. It is not apples to apples, but a mixed fruit of light, medium, and heavy cheaters, along with those playing by the rules.
We are the latter....... because the consequence is so huge based on former experiences....
This in itself puts us at a disadvantage.

Meh. There's maybe four teams who have a legit shot at winning the title. If anyone outside of Bama, Clemson,Georia or Ohio state wins , I'll be shocked.

The mainstream media is phenomenal. The great protector.

The social media versions are not merely corrupt, they lie and mislead with shameless agenda.

Naturally the SAMs are petrified of the actual media. It is the most logical correlation of all. Simplistic Angry Males don't want reality described as reality. They want their tortured value system and view of the world to spread everywhere.

That's why White Right Wing American Males are the most laughably grotesque subset on the planet right now, especially the older models:

You know what is "Laughably Grotesque"... it's your ignorant post. I can see that the far left progressive programming efforts by all the countless outlets has successfully worked with you. So in your mind you so are so hip, intelligent and perceptive... but actually you are simply a perfect ideologue. Child please... if you PM me I may be able to set some time aside and maybe have a beer (or two) with you at a nearby park or by the ocean and discuss life. You may be surprised what an old white hippie has to say about it all.

it would also help us out and usc

Both private schools in big markets. If the U is winning all of south florida will rally behind miami and usc had that in LA till two pro teams came in but I think LA would be all about USC if they started playing like they did when PC was HC
South Florida will rally behind Canes? I'm skeptical. Why aren't they rallying behind team by attending games?

Give me a break.

Even "hardcore" fans on this board go to a bar to watch the game when it is local and played at home.

Whatever happened to that CiS event? I don't get it....I haven't lived in South Florida for decades. I guess the area has changed too much. I can't imagine a fan going to a watering hole instead of to the stadium.

Please......USC maybe....but UM?

Yep....article is trash. So, some Princeton professor who got his glasses stuck up his ******* says something.....Makes it authoritative? Give me a break.

There are multiple programs with significant talent, or capable of holding significant talent, that are or recently have been down due largely to incompetence:

USC
Miami
FSU
UF (on the rise again)
Texas (on the rise again)
Tennessee
Michigan (stuck in the mud)

So we’re left with Bama, Clemson, OSU, UGA, and i guess Oklahoma, with “next level” teams like Penn State, LSU, Notre Dame, and perhaps Auburn and Washington.

I think college football needs 3 of the first list to emerge as elite teams again to challenge the hegemony of the top 4/5 that currently exists because of the bluechip talent they’ve accumulated .

Otherwise, 3 of those 5 are probably going to occupy playoff seats every year in the near term.
NO. Not 3 of first list....we need opportunity for many teams, like UCF, UM, FSU...the upstarts, to be competitive. If you have a small oligarchy owning the top success, over time it will still be the death knell, People will lose interest. The upcoming generation of skinny-armed weenies and immigrants will turn to video games and/or soccer to find their competitive sports.

Notice how empty the stands are now at HS games....think it was that way in '50's and early '60's?

No slur intended against immigrants but most come over knowing soccer, not American football, and they're too skinny and short for American football and hoops.

Absolutely... just because professors write an article doesn't mean shiit to me. I have dozens of books in my bookshelves by respectable authors, so I don't get shaken up by some twerp who writes a slanted article taking jabs at older people by using some bogus journal "Science Advances". Lumping old people into groups of cretins is perfectly in line with the demonizing of conservative thought by the progressives... which is what much of academia is today. The next thing we will be seeing in this country by liberal zealot colleges is to have bonfires burning books that oppose their views... mark my words.
Oh sorry... can we get back to college football.

OU looks pretty darn good too!

There are about 15 programs that have playoff potential

Top 5

OSU
ALA
OKLA
LSU
UGA

Next 5

CLEM
AUB
PSU
FLA
WISC

5 after next

ND
MICH
TEX
WASH
OREG

Switch Clem and LSU. LSU has to go through Bama every year so that knocks them down. Unbeaten Clemson or even 1 loss in the garbage ACC and they are in.

because we suck. They will show up if we are winning and or playing teams at home that are winning. See 2017

If the NCAA had any foresight they would expand the playoffs to eight teams. While Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State will likely be in it for the foreseeable future, increasing the count to eight teams would give the pretense of tournament churn. It's not automatic the OU, LSU, Auburn, and Notre Dame would make it each year as well. You could have up to two fresh teams make it each year, and that would make it seem like there isn't a stranglehold by the top four teams.
