In another thread MotorcityCane brought up a good point that OSU might not be tested until the B1G Champ Game or Playoffs.

(Excluding Bad performances) You could say the same for Clemson, UGA and OU.

Bama still has tough (on paper) matchups vs LSU and AU.

It just feels like the middle class of college football is way down right now.

History suggest that’s one if not two
Of these teams will slip up. But each one will be favorites in all of their remaining games and if they handle business We could have 5 undefeated teams headed into championship weekend.

I think you can take team #10 through team #30-40, have them all play each other and have no idea week to week who'd beat who.

This season has proven yet again that any given week a solid offensive line, a hot QB, a defense that has a shaky afternoon or a team turning it over multiple times is what separates the majority of the Power 5 teams.

At the end the better teams will usually rise up and win, but most games are a dogfight.

At this stage The quietly 5-0 Wake Forest Demon Deacons might roll into Clemson Undefeated at 9-0.

That game may be a UNC style dog fight.

On paper we could have numerous undefeated teams strolling into championship weekend but still a lot of football to be played and one of these contenders are going to drop one they shouldn’t.

Happens every year in college football some sort of major upset of a top ranked team. So them squads can’t be sleeping walking through the rest of their schedule like Clemson did with UNC.

It’s top heavy right now. I think you could make a case that from top 6-top 40 could potentially beat each other on any given week.

Yes college football is dead. There are only 5-6 with a legit shot st winning it all. The rest are just there. The money and teams throwing it around like they’re printing it will be the death to the sport.

I hope Congress and everyone start passing laws to pay the players. That will fundamentally blow up college football and then we can begin somewhere.

Yes, it’s the protected class of cheaters and then everyone else. The massive public land grant universities with rabid fan bases willing to do whatever it takes to win, backed by an NCAA with their self interest aligned with those same universities, leaves the rest of CFB out in the cold, and no one in the media cares to discuss the elephant in the room.

The games aren’t very competitive for the most part. There have been a handful of good games this season but for the most part it’s one team crushing another. Going to be hard to sell advertisements when a majority of fans turn it off by halftime.

i will say its really the top 5 and this year maybe Auburn and LSU maybe
and it will not change anytime soon. what i find borderline funny is all the talk of expanding playoffs 1 more week end of 2big dogs steamrolling 2 lesser schools....

The only way that would work is if they introduced a Salary Cap and prosecuted teams that broke it.

Otherwise Alabama, Clemson, Georgia et al are just going to pay the players more than everyone else.

College football has turned into the MLB. You have the big market clubs, small market clubs and everyone in between. Generally the 5-6 big market clubs with unlimited money/resources are the ones winning it in the end.
Your right after the top 10 teams i see a big drop off. The 1%ers of college football are stacking talent. Look at Alabama they have so many star WRs they have to play rock paper scissor for a chance to get the football.

It’s worse than MLB, because MLB was a system in place that enforces rules that everyone must adhere to its why a team like KC can win a title, or any of the smaller markets can compete (assuming they are ran correctly like a Houston, San Francisco, St. Louis etc.).

College Football is broken because there are two systems. Clemson, Bama, Ohio St. and a few other teams are able to work outside the “stated rules” without abandon or fear of reprisal (system 1). Then, you have everyone else who can at any moment be taken to task (the Nevin situation is prime example). This second system places restrictions on how teams can compete making it difficult (not impossible) to compete with the favored 5-6 teams. A team like Miami has to be nearly flawless with how it funds its program (coaching hires, facilities, etc) because there isn’t much in terms of a margin for error. Miami can compete but it’s stretch of dominance we saw in the 80s and 90s may not happen again unless we have a true visionary leading the program where the head coach and his staff can be replaced seamlessly (think back to Boise State with Koetter, Hawkins, Petersen, and now Harsin) to maintain a high level of success.

That’s the point. 90% of P5 teams and the G5 would start a new division and the money spenders would be left outside. The big spenders would be left without a division or a conference. What would they do Then?

Something is going to give within the next 5 years. Greedy ****sticks st the NCAA with their desire to make money have already put the nail into the coffin. The playoff was the last death stroke

It's getting like it was in the 1970s. Bag money is accumulating the top talent in a very small number of schools, and the spending is creating a real barrier to entry for anyone below them. Let's say you're UCF for instance. You've coached and innovated yourself into a Top 25 school. You've won against Power 5 programs. But can you really take out an Alabama or Clemson? Unlikely, unless you begin to get some of the premiere talent that these schools possess. When the going rate for a premiere wide receiver is now supposedly 250K - for a single player - can a UCF, Baylor, or others afford to compete?

Going further, in a way college football is becoming like the NBA. Only a very small number of teams realistically can compete for the championship (since 1980 there have been only 11 franchises that have won it - Los Angeles, Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, Miami, Dallas, Cleveland, Golden State, and Philadelphia, and the Lakers, Celtics, and Bulls account for almost half of those wins). Right now, CFB is essentially set up where for the next decade the playoffs will feature Alabama, Oklahoma (or possibly Texas), Clemson, and Ohio State.

The media is corrupt all the way around---sports, politics.....all of it.

EDIT; And it doesn't give me pleasure to say that. I used to deal with the media from time-to-time, including at top national outlets, both print and broadcast. There's a newer, younger generation that sees itself as agenda-driven. No longer neutral, objective, dispassionate....no longer worthy of our trust.

There are multiple programs with significant talent, or capable of holding significant talent, that are or recently have been down due largely to incompetence:

USC
Miami
FSU
UF (on the rise again)
Texas (on the rise again)
Tennessee
Michigan (stuck in the mud)

So we’re left with Bama, Clemson, OSU, UGA, and i guess Oklahoma, with “next level” teams like Penn State, LSU, Notre Dame, and perhaps Auburn and Washington.

I think college football needs 3 of the first list to emerge as elite teams again to challenge the hegemony of the top 4/5 that currently exists because of the bluechip talent they’ve accumulated .

Otherwise, 3 of those 5 are probably going to occupy playoff seats every year in the near term.

This is what happens when a small handful of teams are allowed to snag a large portion of top talent. Allowed to buy it, that is. The rest of the teams are all about the same now. It makes it **** boring if you ask me. Sure, there is parity from #10 down to #70, but it will be the same top teams every year, and that just sucks.

College football isn't down. People are just silly and over react. Everyone falls into 4 categories because of the "what have you done lately" mindset;

Elite: Undefeated blue blood in a P5 conference.
Hasn't played anybody: Undefeated non blue blood.
Trash: Anybody in the P5 conference with 1 or more loss.
Trash version 2: Got blown out by an elite team.

I mean Baylor was competing and was starting to stack some blue chip guys they had never gotten before...

Of course they couldn’t keep their players from raping everyone... too many bad eggs they took chances on blew it up

And if that happens, The U would be dead
