At this point we all know "he lead us through the cloud" and "he has showed progress" and everything else that has been said in the last year or so. I've been thinking about this past season and now looking back, any kind of promise we showed actually doesn't seem to be that impressive.
As far as the cloud goes, good for him, but its over. That cant be an excuse anymore. In reality though, was it that hard to recruit even with the cloud? The majority of kids come to miami because its ******* MIAMI. We were getting the kids that were good but not good enough for FSU, (outside of Duke Johnson he was a cane from day 1 regardless), the kids Florida didnt need and the ones that had staying close to home high on their list. Thats what we got. It looked like a heroic effort when it happened but now i dont think it was that big of a deal. IMO any coach would have had the same results.
Making progress: Yes we went 6-6, 7-5, to 9-4. Our teams were complete **** the first 2 years and with that roster 6-6, 7-5 seemed acceptable. Then 9-4, looks like significant progress, being 7-0 and ranked #7 at one point, but the schedule was nothing to show for. Anything less than 7-0 and he's probably being begged to be fired last year after the FSU game. Then we all know, we had a loaded roster this year, and 6-6 is what we get. That isnt progress. The last 2 years from FSU on we are 2-4 and now 0-3 with a game remaining. That rules out progress.
The FSU game: We all know we had FSU beat. But watching that game i just knew eventually we would lose. I knew it and it happened. FSU has done it 8 times this year to teams that arent even as good as us. Regardless of how good the team is, I am sold at this point that FSU will beat them by less than 7 points. Had we been 1 of maybe 2 or 3 teams that played them that way then I would buy that, but **** NC state had them KILLED and blew it, ND, BC, Florida, Clemson, everyone pretty much. Throw that out now, it just doesn't look like it was actually as good of a game as it was.
This season in general, going on the road to UL, it was a blackout croud, blacked out jerseys, night game, nationally televised, we have a freshman qb. It didnt look good from the start, and it didnt look good at the end. Yes our defense held us in the game, but the ball was consistently being run down our throat and that mediocre qb picked us apart all game. He then went on to lose to UVA and the qb that looked amazing against us got pulled from the game. Just 1 game later. Nebraska went on to lose towards the end of their season and showed their true colors. We got it run down our throats again. GT, run it down our throats, as usual. We looked like we never seen the option before, totally un prepared, when it was said that Golden seems to have the formula to beat them. We did nothing similar to previous years. But in the end, hats off to GT they beat georgia and actually look decent. Then our end of the year collapse, 2 games we should have won but didnt. Typical Al Golden
Lastly, as a recruiter, I strongly believe Al can sell this program, but I still think his eye for talent is lacking. Coley has the eye, he was the first guy to spot Kaaya and had he not offered him before anyone else and spotted him first he is probably in powder blue and gold or red and gold. But i just watch us settle for taking 15 3 star recruits in our class and it being ranked number 10 because of size. Its like Tennessee, they have more talent than we do, but not nearly deserving #3 or 4 class in the nation. I would much rather settle like LSU does for maybe 20 guys in a class all targeting the top tier guys and dont even look at the lower end guys until you realize we arent going to land the big guy. That would solve our scholarship problem as well. We are getting commits from the guys just thankful to get a miami offer and having no room for the big named guys. I will say though, the 2016 class is how it needs to be every year. I will rule out recruiting if he is able to hold that class together, but if not, Im not sold on him being as good of a recruiter as he gets credit for.
