Interior oline improvements

Eh. Gauthier was actually a really solid center. Gaynor is still TBD.

Scaife vs Jones is a clear upgrade though.

If our o-line is average and jarren doesn’t turnover the ball, there is no reason we lose to anyone in the regular season outside of Florida with the defense we have.

the most logical explanation for starting two freshmen at tackle is that they want to solidify the interior of the line and scheme around whatever weaknesses we have outside. hopefully scaife, gaynor, and donaldson are able to uphold their end of the bargain.
And the thing with that is we have more capable guards than at tackle imo, they could have easily moved scaife at tackle if they felt the need to and placed Cleveland reed as a starting guard(who imo will be a good player if he indeed did start). So they must have some type of confidence in the tackles

Completely agree, pressure up the middle is much harder to deal with for a QB. Jarrens got good feet if we can keep a solid pocket he’ll be ok, pressure up the middle is tough to handle and affects our quick passing game

You mean there was no musical chairs on the o line. Guys playing different positions every day. Thats crazy

seeing multiple OL sub in and out in the middle of a drive is retarded. drives me insane when we substitute OL so much

I don’t know man, all 3 are unproven players imo. Scaife showing enough to play as true Fr, but not excelling, Donaldson came back down to earth since his Fr year and Gaynor couldn’t crack the rotation last year after playing as a Fr.

I expect Donaldson and Scaife to be at least above average and I have no idea what to expect from Gaynor. Hoping for the best, but not holding my breath

Donaldson should’ve never been playing tackle

wasn't it because he was injured early though?
It may have possibly contributed to their decision. He spoke about it during spring or the beginning of fall camp. I remember him saying it was somewhat embrassing to be redshirted as a Sophomore. Look for his post practice interviews from spring or early fall.

That is actually a pretty reliable unit in the middle. When a true freshman wins the job at LT, it usually means they're something special, because he would have to overcome the bias from being a true freshman to win the job. They're also getting on the job training against a very good DL.

At the very least, there's three solid maulers in the middle of the line. What they may lack in finesse , they make up for in brute strength and tenacity. I like the way the line is shaping up. Physical guys up the middle with more athletic guys on the outside. They're still young and I'm sure they'll look bad sometimes but at least there's a plan for the offensive line instead of just throwing random guys out at random positions and hoping they can play.

It's also good news that the only change in the starting lineup was at RT.

Position consistency very key for OL to play good as a unit. Glad to see it after the circus last couple of years

I don't want to get into a Gaynor argument again but he should have never been out there until his 3rd year in the program. He was a development kid all the way out of Douglas. It would be the equal to throwing El Gammal out there at any point this year or next year and expecting him to hold up. Its not fair. If Gaynor had given us ANYTHING at all before his 3rd year then that should have been considered gravy.

This is his 3rd year, he should be good to go. Not sure why people are questioning if he will hold up or not, if Romberg says hes ready, hes ready. (Romberg is a very harsh critic if some of you didn't follow him locally when he was on 790. If Gaynor sucked, he would have said so)

Pretty hard NOT to be concerned about how our OTs play. Biggest question of the game. Will they hold up, or get abused? If it's the latter, could be a long night for JW.

2018
Lg jahair jones
C gaulthier
Rg Donaldson /Mahoney

Vs

2019
Lg navaughn Donaldson
C Corey gaynor
Rg Delone scaife

That’s a big difference folks..

We aren’t talking enough about how improved the interior play will be this year. Miami should be very solid up the middle and starting a first time qb especially one that is mobile I would rather deal with pressure that possible could come from the outside than inside which can be mitigated by quick passes, chipping , moving the pocket amongst other things etc. In addition to that jarren could step up and move around in the pocket if outside pressure happens. the 2019 interior line will be much more gifted than last years oline

On another note, On the outside at tackle while Campbell is a redshirt freshman and that enrolled early, he’s been at Miami **** near 2 years almost and had a strong camp. Yes we are starting Zion Nelson but we have to think about it, he’s been a solid fixture in the starting lineup **** near day 1 and seems to be impressing with no one said to be taking any of his reps
I’m not sure how it’s that much better or at best just a bit better. Donaldson is a wash. Not sure how you make an argument Gaynor is better than a several years starter who played well. Scaife fo sure is better but that seems to be a wash with center. Seems at best a tad better from the cushion of 3 solid guys versus having a Jones there

Lol at Mahoney playing well

It’s not a wash. Donaldson will be playing his true position and another year of experience under his belt, scaife started 7 or 8 games last year and you have your two most solid and proven lineman in the interior. Gaynor is going to be a solid player this year and plays mean and is the leader on the oline. It’s a complete upgrade from starting guys like jahair Jones/ Hayden Mahoney at the guard spots.
