Was listening to Ivins podcast with Cooper Petagna (who was Mario's Director of recruiting at Oregon so knows him well.) They were talking about mistakes they've made and how to learn from them.

They brought up the three DB's from Florida who play at Illinois and are all going to the Senior Bowl- Devon Witherspoonn, Sydney Brown and Jartavious Martin. They discussed how they (as well as the big 3) missed on them and and they slipped through the cracks. The commonality- all were multi-sport athletes basketball and state qualifiers in track and high production as seniors.

Another interesting tidbit- Cooper discussed how Mario has 3-4 different NIL pools he's tapping into.

Multi sport guys who are talented are always guys to evaluate extra. They have split their time so much that you try to envision a year round commitment to one sport. Vandy kills it in baseball with these types. Arms are fresh because they aren’t playing in crappy Pg tourneys all year.

Sounds just like Micah Mays this year.

3 sport star who is currently committed to Wake Forest. Hope Mario can flip him

What's the name of the podcast? I will listen to Through the Smoke sometimes and he is occasionally on there, but couldn't find this one.

As to your last sentence, what happened to all the separation of school and NIL nonsense?
Just like coaches who didn’t know which players were being paid under the table.

Specializing in a sport was nothing more than a con to dupe parents into paying for special coaches. It's mostly a scam.
This. Everyone thinks their kid is going to college on a scholarship so they push them into these sports when they're 8 or whatever, turns out most kids are just average (of course) and no amount of specialization can save you from being average. Personally, I don't like quarterback recruits that don't play other sports.

Back in the day I didn't want any non wrestler front 7 guys. We live in a different age though, can thank AAU basketball. When the isolation into a singular sport started.

Track eh???

lucas di grassi drinking GIF by ABB Formula E

And if a kid doesn't play multiple sports, I like kids that play multiple football positions in HS, e.g. Warren Sapp, Ray Lewis, Dan Morgan, Sean Taylor, etc..

From everything I have read this is where Butch made his mark. Kids who went to awful high schools. Not with regards to football teams. But weight rooms, treatment, etc. Find a guy that was dominating and the football team barely lifted or just ran and did push ups or real basic stuff.

Butch's MAIN thing....he abhorred Prima Donna's....the SECOND a kid started that "am I gonna start" BS....it was over. He wanted Kids that were willing to compete. That entitlement garbage stood no chance with him, nor any of his recruiters.

I’d think back channels would provide a way for Mario to communicate which recruits he is prioritizing.

The rules, I believe, maybe wrong, are a deal cannot specify which school the recruit will sign with or play for. That’s not the same as Mario telling Ruiz, or whomever, he’s focused hard on Mark Fletcher and a list of others.

A lot of grey area….

The one thing I KNOW about Butch is that man enjoyed his Koo Koo Roo

Decades ago, most D1 guys played at least another sport, often two. Sometimes they may quit their other sport(s) later in HS and zero in on one. As mentioned earlier, parents get conned into believing that kids have to specialize in one sport year round from an early age. Mostly BS and a big $$$ grab.

Mario several NILs. 👍🏽
