this is all guesswork ... but in terms of the positions up for grabs, congdon is more suited for guard, whereas cantwell would have been more suited for a tackle spot

I mean Congdon is 6’7 and was 280 when he got here. That’s a tackle frame if I’ve ever seen it. And if he’s naturally more athletic in the sense of opening his hips, reach, etc it would make sense in week 1 of Freshman fall camp he’s ahead of Cantwell. Who was more known for his strength and size.

Wouldn’t really track since we cross train and there were no set positions even for veterans other than Rodriguez

Still think the kid starts though. I’m actually seeing this as a positive for Congdon rather than a negative for Cantwell

Mauigoa was different. He was ready from Day 1 I personally didn’t see Cantwell the same in high school, but he’s been here for 6 months getting elite training so it’s certainly possible
 
Remember its very early in camp and dmoney said there is alot of competition and moving parts right now

Also congdon is probably way ahead at guard than cantwell. So If samson is looking good at left tackel and mccoy is probably going to play rt then there is a way easier path for congdon to play than there is for cantwell. Add on that multiple people said max could have played last year at guard too so thats even more people naturally ahead of him

So cantwell is fighting an uphill battle at both spots, he is a tackle so he will probably have to fight with two vets to play. But if he is who we all believe then he will rise and take a spot sooner than later

Idk how many times it has to be said, D$ himself will tell you he is sunshine koolaid hypeman, heck he cuts a yearly preseason hype promo where we going 16-0.. You have to just take that as a data point (a great datapoint but still) and try to cross reference with others and whatever clips we see.. Plus true freshman olineman is tough, you not supposed to have multiple playing.. Having Samson come and stabilize left tackle is a GREAT thing..
 
Samson is the typical example of how long it takes for an OL to be ready to play at this level (2-3 years).

No matter what is said on these boards or through the media, I 100% expect struggles from this OL. Do not be surprised if Stanford confuses and has success against this unit. QB, RB, and WR play will have to make up for this throughout the year.
 
Just find the best 5 to get you through the first first games while rotating heavily games 2,3 & 4 and then start your new real top 5 for Clemson after the pre season is finished.

Do you believe this o line is less talented and experienced than the 2023 Oline? The same O line that competed well against Clemson and FSU lines littered with future NFL pros and pretty much dominated the ACC.

It’s gonna hurt when one of the big 3 from last cycle transfer out.

Ultimately all that matters is what happens on gameday. IDC who is out there, as long as the product is solid. Obviously the games still have to be played, but wasn’t difficult to see that Congdon would be a dude under this tutelage given the clay. Years ago guys like Buchanan would have been a lock to be in the top 5 the entire year. Now, not so much…..and that is exactly how it’s supposed to be. I expect to see Congdon and/or Ervin in for short yardage/heavy sets with a TE number quite often with Gilbert out.

*In a perfect world, IMO, McCoy takes one of the OG spots and Cantwell/Okunlola split the OT spots. I think for what we like to do with duo and IZ, McCoy’s grown man strength is needed inside and that’s where his experience lies. Obviously they know 748599594993948484838x more than all of us when it comes to this stuff, just my .02. Cooper, and McCoy/Okunlola were pretty vital for us on our run last year handling the IDL of those playoff squads.

That all sounds about right to me. Seniors in McCoy and Sampson at the tackle position and the freshman monsters at the guard position, leaning into their already built in advantages in run blocking. I believe that’ll be our line this year.

We also have a coach that refused to allow who was playing backup left guard be discussed last year after our scrimmage

So who even knows what’s the truth

You don’t like mccoy but the best case scenario would be mccoy at lg and max at center. But ryan seems like the only lock as of now so that’s unlikely
