Interesting comments on practicing physicality

And Saban learned it from Bilichick, who learned it from Bill Parcelles.

But there’s nothing unique to it, ALL coaches used to practice that way. Which is why pretty much any top 10 team from the 80’s would be national champions today. Saban is just an old school coach, nothing special. His way of doing things would have been a dime a dozen back then.

A lot of coaches have gotten away from that with all the spread and air raid football you see today, plus the NCAA and their rules on practicing. And the feeling that you need to coddle this generation in order to recruit. But it used to just be normal to practice physical.
Saban called Butch in the Mid, to late 90s when he was HC @ MSU, and asked him if he could come down to GreenTree and watch the Canes practice, and to get pointers...after his 1st visit, he came down several more times.

No. Please for the love of god I beg people not to rehash this debate.

It devolves into a ton of people who have no clue what they’re talking about making absurd hot takes backed by absolutely no experience or knowledge.

(Like every other topic)
seems to me the topic has been rehashed w people claiming their bodies will get used to it and they wont get hurt anymore. if only someone told tua his head would get used to getting bashed in and he wont get concussions anymore

Not picking on your post my guy

But we’ve already had this discussion like 20x and literally no progress gets made so just don’t see the point in doing it again

We can just go re-read old threads the information is the same that we have now

oh I agree w you. we just see this **** rehashed and its dumb. you dont need to be tough and physical as Mario says to be good at football. you have to be well coached and in a system tailored to your rosters talent. the rest is just bull**** to excuse a coaching failure

Like anything in life there’s lots of pieces to the puzzle so when people want to drill down to one thing and die on that hill, man it’s just not worth the time

Moffitt was my guy, but he was only at UM a hair over 2yrs (98-2000)...but even Dale Huelett before him & Swasey had rigorous training. Thing was, Butch's kids (@Brooklyndee included) did alot of Workouts on their own, both on campus, and off.
That's not on s&c though. That's 100% getting leaders back in various rooms. We've been lacking leaders for far too long and on the rare occasions we've had one or two they're looked at as outcasts opposed to the norm. That's where we're switching things up again.

I posted this in another thread but I am on IMG campus a lot and I cannot put in words that would properly convey how hard Francis works. Regardless of all the bells and whistles of IMG and the fact he is a 5* dude he is outworking guys who are at IMG just to train in the offseason let alone the other players on the team.

He will not be outworked, he takes pride in that ish and Big Joe will prob be on him constantly and he is the type to feed off of it. My general rule is no to TF OL but he may be an exception.

That's why he was such a big get. We need more cats with that kind of mindset.

Listened to Andy Staples podcast previewing the Georgia- Ohio State game and he was commenting about how much more physical and tough Georgia is and how they practice it every Tuesday. He commented how Ohio State used to be that way under Meyer.

He then discussed how he watched some Oregon practices when Mario was there and was shocked how physical they were even in an off week. He was basically talking about how Mario and Kirby learned this approach under Saban. This somewhat explains some of the growing pains we had this year.
You hear anything about how saban would have fired our oc if he had him? Guess he didnt get sabans balls

Saban has said he modeled his approach on the canes philosophy.

I believe it is difficult to be intense when you lose so many games. We saw players quit and some play harder but it is a team sport and requires commitment from every one, that comes with winning. Our great teams had other teams beat before kickoff.

and those teams went through a lot of losing before they got to that point

It explains his teams having a lot of injuries I guess…

That's what I was trying to tell the people back in Oct and Nov with all the nicks and bruises that's just gonna happen the first year with the new regime as guys get used to the new way things are being done and it will pay off
Oregon was injury plagued last year in year 4…it wasn’t unique to this roster
