Insight on App State?

If you go back to the Tenn game, the 2nd half, Tenn figured out that they had a size advantage on their O-Line and they slowly let them take over and started racking up yards on the ground.

The new look canes(Not throwing 40plus passes) will abuse the undersized APPY D-Line, throwing the ball around just enough to keep them honest. The 1st 2 games were very vanilla for the []_[]. We will see more formations and packages starting Saturday, and even then we still have more looks a wrinkles in reserve for ACC play.

It will start slow, wear them down, and then BAM!

App St only chance is because they are at home and they're unfamiliar to our team. Football is a game of matchups. I just don't think they matchup to our aggression on the line of scrimmage on D or our ability to run the ball on O. Look for tons of tackles for loss when they try those long developing plays. Crediting their performance against Tenn is the reason they wont catch anyone by surprise.

Serious question: is this App St team significantly better than the Arkansas St team we easily handled back in 2014?

.

Let me add what I hope will be seen as some rational commentary here.

Yes, this App team is better than the Arkansas St team you played in 2014 and is better than the App State team that managed to lose to Arkansas State last year.

You are absolutely correct that we really don't have much to go on as far as film study on Miami. You've got a new coach (and a good one at that!), so we can't really look at last year's film for much insight. The beginning of Miami's schedule this year seems almost like a stair step of opponents from easiest to hardest. Watching any film from that game against FAMU would not likely be much help.

On the flip side of that coin, you've got Miami being able to see App play against UT - certainly a game App was "up" for. That film will expose some of our weaknesses and strengths.
  • O-line - solid, kept UT's D out of the backfield most of the night, allowed zero sacks against UT
  • QB - good game sense, not the best passer, truly understands the game, makes up for what I perceive to be weaknesses in athletic ability with mental skill
  • Running backs - Marcus Cox is small but really is quite good, Jalin Moore is just as capable though two years younger, against ODU we got a glimpse of the future of App running backs when New Smyrna Beach true freshman Darrynton Evans was in for a series. I think we're fine here.
  • WR's - we graduated some fine WR's last year. In Shaedon Meadors and Deltron Hopkins we've got two fine receivers. My concern is with the QB getting the pass on target, checking off receivers, etc. and not with the WR's themselves.
  • Kicking game - punter is exceptional; kicker is a freshman and will come along. Kicking game was definitely a factor at UT but not against ODU.
  • D-line - managed to be in UT's backfield most of the night. Was this UT O-line issues and not our D-line? D-line is smaller and faster than most you'll see this year. We'll know more Saturday.
  • Secondary - true freshman Clifton Duck is quite good but still small. Secondary hasn't really been tested since Dobbs was not throwing much at UT. I believe our DC is one of the best in the business and will adjust as much as possible.

What it all boils down to is that winning or losing will be on the field on Saturday. Miami is and should be favored - by how much is anyone's guess.

Those of you decrying the decision to play a home and home with App can be thankful you ended up with an FBS opponent even though you believe that playing in Boone is beneath you. Rest assured that our playing field is the same size as yours even if the stands are smaller. If you want to talk good football before or after the game, you'll find plenty of App fans willing to do so. On the other hand, if you only want to talk trash, you'll (unfortunately) find a few App fans willing to engage you in a trash fest.

Safe travels to those of you making the trip to Boone. You'll see me at the game. I'll be the one in black. :)

Our D-line has to beat the cut blocks, and they have to be disciplined because App St likes to run screen. The jet sweep gave Tenn fits and allowed them to convert some 3rd down plays.

I think Kul will have them ready

If BK, Stacey Coley, Berrios, Richards, Herndon, and Njoku can't win 1 on 1 match ups, then they aren't who we thought they were

41-14 Canes

Thank you for being reasonable and talking football, we appreciate the insight

with all due respect, there's zero reason we should be traveling to boone..

this is coming from a fan of app state in his own right, no I don't follow you but after what happened in michigan I always will take a peek at your scores

regardless, might as well have bama travel to charleston southern if you get what im saying

They probably paid $$$ for us to travel and they are a fbs team so why not. M friends who graduated from app that are Miami fans are certainly happy

Not to mention their home field advantage doesn't hurt us. Why waste one of our six home games this year on a game we (should) win

Apparently Miami had to scramble to fill the slot with an opponent and App St stepped up as long as we came to Boone first. Thats what I read, at least. May not be the case, but why does it matter? Its a home and home against an FBS conference team. Is every other conference OK to have a home and home series with except the Sun Belt?

To be honest, Id rather schedule a Sun Belt opponent every year and drop the FCS ones. No more FAMU, Charleston SOuthern, Savannah St, or Bethune-Cookman. Give me Georgia Southern, App St, Georgia State (my grad school alma mater).

I agree to an extent. I think famu is a great game becuase the crowd is always great for that.

I would like to see us get to the days where we have two decent teams ooc and two cupcakes scheduled. This year is like that somewhat with notre Dame and app but I personally don't believe app is as good as some believe

Let's be honest here, Cox is a good back, but would be buried on our depth chart. Even Edwards might be the starter at App, but didn't even see the field Saturday. I'm sure App's defensive line is pretty good, but UT's line is also their biggest weakness outside of Dobbs' arm. Miami's DL trumps App's by a good margin and is who Miami sees every single practice and who they saw all camp. I'm not trying to throw shade at Apps St. I respect them and understand that if Miami looks past them it will be a game they can lose, but I'm expecting this staff to actually have the team focused because we have real coaches for once and if my assumption is correct then Miami should win by a few scores. I'm not saying they should win 41-10, but if the team is focused and Kaaya shows up then it's hard to see how Appy St can stop this offense consistently enough to give their offense a chance. Our defense is too fast and swarms too much for Appy St to put up a big number, so their defense will have to have the game of their lives.

1. Of course you didn't allow a sack against Tenn., you didn't really throw the football. And when you did, your QB made quick, safe, go no where throws. So the opportunity to even allow sacks wasn't there. That doesn't mean your OL performed well in pass protection. It just means you schemed around it to the tune of 13 points.
2. I'll hold off on saying whether your QB has a great mental skill set or not, because I haven't seen enough games. But the UT performance wasn't an example of that. It's not like he made a bunch of audibles or pre-snap reads or went though his progressions. They barely put the game in his hands, and what they asked him to do, any QB in the country could have done.
3. I liked the RBs, or liked the Cox kid. Can't say I remember the others.
4. Your WRs were horrible against a legit P5 team. Zero separation. And it didn't look like your coach had any faith in them, the QB, the OL, or a combination of the three to even attempt a meaningful pass. Can't say how they did against OD.

App's offense is similar to what we saw from FAU except they don't run hurry up. Expect to see Manny sell out to stop the run and make plays in the backfield and force their QB to beat them throwing. Similar to what they did against Driskell and FAU.

If Kaaya comes out sloppy and inaccurate like he did against FAU, it will remain low scoring until the depth overpowers them later in the game. If Kaaya has a typically sharp game and doesn't turn the ball over, I can't see this game being decided by less than 17 points. The betting line opened at 3.5 but has already jumped to 5. So, it looks like the betters like the Canes to cover.

They probably paid $$$ for us to travel and they are a fbs team so why not.

I believe the deal was a true home and home - no dollar incentives paid from either team to the other.

Correct. Miami had scheduled a home/home with (I believe) West Virginia but WV dropped it at the last second causing Blake James to scramble to find a replacement. With FAMU and FAU already getting big payouts, the administration didn't want spend money for another cupcake to come to Miami. While a lot of people are disappointed that Miami is going to Boone, I think it's better than paying some punching bag to come here. At least there will be some intrigue for this game. The only problem is, it's kind of lose-lose for Miami. Go to Boone and win big and the national media is "meh, it's App State". Go to Boone and pull out a squeaker or even lose and national media says "new coach, same Miami".

They obviously can beat us, if we play like crap and they play great. That wasn't true of our first two games. Just look at the differences between our and their game vs. Clemson last year.

If we stay disciplined on D, it will be very tough for them to score. And Kaaya can't be throwing passes straight to them.

From friend in NC:

"Boonies are going crazy right now. They let UT get away and they know it. They are absolutely expecting to win this game. Didnt ESPN move it to the 1200 slot? They are hoping to run dramatic "last second" Miami loss footage for the rest of the day, its all about eyeballs remember? That Cox kid reminds some of a bigger version of Sproles. You Miami thugs better come to play or it aint going to overtime."

For record..my friend was teasing about the thugs part...he is actually a closet Canes fan stuck at UNC...

Were I a betting man, I would think that Richt would be doing ground game and some RPO's all through the first half to beat up that D Line.
