Insane Defensive Stat

This is also a byproduct of being the 7th best team at ball possession in the country. So Mario correlates the elite defense at least somewhat to slow possessive offense that keeps the other team's offense off the field.

Less opportunities for the other team means less yards. It's actually pretty sound in theory.

But situational awareness has to be a part of the equation as well and a good head coach has to be able to pivot strategies and pace when the game dictates that.
You make a good point and obviously TOP helps our D,
But we are 8th in the country in yards per play (P5 teams vs FBS).

That’s great stat & love our DC, but let’s not get carried away. Florida couldn’t get out of its own way, QB had had limited practice snaps & HC subsequently got fired. Stanford is just awful.
Well, even an offensive guru like Brohm had to throw the kitchen sink at Hearherman’s defense and still found it to be tough sledding after scoring 14 on us in the 1st quarter. The rest of that game our defense played well. We lost because of Carson’s 4 INT’s.

Heatherman is going to have suitors with all these changes so he will be getting a sizable bump im sure to hang around.
I’ll hook him up

I just read that Stanford did not cross their own 35-yard line after the first drive until the mid-fourth quarter.
Also of the 70 yards after the frist two drives 20 came on one pass play with 7:50 left in the game.
That's serious domination.
I was tracking their yardage in the second half at the game. At halftime, they had 93 total yards. About three quarters of the way through the third quarter, they had 93 total yards.

An average college game has 24 possessions (12 each obviously). Stanford had 11 possessions so they had their chances, they just did nothing with them.

Canes D has now held UF and Stanford below 150 total yards of offense.

Over the last 25 seasons (2000-2024) Miami held just FOUR P4 opponents under 150 total

2001 - Rutgers
2005 - Duke
2006 - VT
2009 - UVA

It’s the first time Miami has held two P4 opponents below 150 yards in at least 30 years.
I'd also like to note, if it wasnt for the defense. We lose to louisville by 3 tuddies

The D was wonderful but UF and Stanford had atrocious QB play. Both teams had guys running open, just couldn't hit them.

Let's be happy but not full of ourselves. We got weaknesses on D (can Toure be counted on to cover? Can we tackle consistently? Why didn't we adjust better to Louisville's shallow crosser?)

Corey is the truth.

Dude can adapt.

It feels like we hold our opponents to their lowest total yards/points for the season so far
It feels like that because it’s pretty much the case.

We have held 4 of 6 opponents to their lowest point total on the season (other two, FSU and Stanford, were their second lowest outputs)

We’ve held 5 of 6 to their lowest yards/play on the season.

We’ve held 4 of 6 to their lowest total yardage on the season (other two, FSU and Louisville, were their second lowest outputs)

Below is each opponent with some defensive stats, both volume and rate, and where our game ranked for them on the season, 1 being their worst output.

And SMU's offense is nothing special. Currently 40th in YPP on the season, but that's trending down.

They've played the last 5 Saturdays, all against P4 teams, but 2 of them absolutely terrible. Stanford and Syracuse. The other 3 were TCU, Clemson, and Wake. Not exactly murderer's row, and in those 5 games, they got over 6.04 a play only once (against Stanford), with the most recent game against Wake being by far their season low, at 3.67

One thing I noticed, and porsters here have pointed out he's dinged up, but Jennings is throwing the ball way more this year than last. Last year he averaged 27 passes a game, this year that number is up to 34. He also had 7 games last year where he rushed for 20 or more yards. This year, it's ONE. Clemson, and it was exactly 20.

He's not running as much, when he runs he's not as effective, and he's throwing it a lot more. He's not a good passer, if he's sitting in the pocket and not running around, that's a massive win for us.

Yeah, they’re not a good football team. Nowhere near what they were last season and that team was a paper tiger completely propped up by its schedule. I said (I think) after the Baylor game that they’d probably be 5-3 when we play them. They look like a G5 team.

Could we lose? Sure. But unless a totally different Miami defense shows up Saturday they will not have much offensive success.

We just need to score 30. If we put 30 on the board, and don't gift them free points, I think it's a nice win.

I know you can probably do this for a lot of teams. But I keep thinking if we could have paired this years defence with last years offence, a national title game would have just about been inevitable

Then you shouldn't criticize the Miami offense because we have WR running open yet U got all the smoke for Dawson.

U can't have it both ways

I mentioned in another thread, the way they gacked away the Wake game after it being handed to them on a silver platter, not once, but twice really changed my opinion of them. Unable to run out the clock and then give up a 25 yard completion to let them in field goal range…

Listening to him speak at today’s presser now. I think Heatherman gets called up to the league after this season unfortunately.
