I maintained 2 3000 card per minute card readers, fastest ever made and was accurate. The 80 column card was utilized as a standard even after they became obsolete. Those cards were great for making notes on, I still have some.

I worked for several NASA projects for a contractor from 1983-2001 at the Greenbelt, MD campus. I am old enough to remember transition from cards to what was referred to as terminals. Anyways, by late 1980s transition had been completed on most projects except for this one coot who was a NASA scientist with some apparent pull. Dude used that card reader into early 1990s,.showing up to use his own allocated card puncher to update his deck of cards which he protected like a bird protecting her chicks...lol
