The University of Miami has hired Josh Darrow as its new Assistant Director of Player Personnel. He will take the position formerly occupied by Kevin Beard, who was recently promoted to wide receivers coach.

Why is this a significant hire for Miami? Over the last few years with the launch of his website SFHSSPORTS.com, Darrow has revolutionized the coverage of high school football in South Florida from a media perspective. His vast connections in the Dade and Broward areas are perfect for this position, which consists of many recruiting-related tasks. He will be involved in dealing with high school coaches, getting coaches and recruits to campus and events.

Darrow is one of the most well-respected and hard-working individuals in the business. Although this is technically a new career path for him, I have no doubt that his experience and knowledge from the last few years will be carried over into his position at Miami. He understands the recruiting process from every angle possible, which is why I am a huge fan of this unique hire.

Maybe it's just me, but something seems off if you're going into your fifth year of coaching and you still are hiring people based on connections in your backyard. Seems we've heard that song before.

It isn't connections we are lacking, it's performance.

6-7 after year 4. Yeah something is off. Watching Beard show our clueless WRs how to run routes is is another clue. Hiring competent people would help matters across the board. People seem to think that Darrow is a great fit for the role.

What have you been following????

Go look at the 2015 class and look at hometown, find all the "Fl's" you can and then realize why we suck.

Thanks for making my point. That wasn't because we lacked connections.

I think we lacked both, performance AND connections. But I guess that's just my opinion....

No one was fired for Darrow to take the position. It also wasn't created out of thin air. There was an open position. Did you want a guy who is tied-in to Texas to get hired? Leave the position unfilled? Unless you have a name more qualified I'm not sure what the problem is.

How about both?

All the 'FLs' bugged out because our coach blows. And because our coach blows and everyone down here knows it, the connections have turned soft. We didn't go 6-7 in Year 4 because his 5th recruiting class was weak.

My response in the other thread....

This...All these high school hires and Darrow SCREAM desperation from these fat Joisey b***hes to connect to the south Florida athletes and communities.

What people fail to realize is - it's not an easy task to recruit down down here. It's especially difficult when almost all of our coaches when hired didn't have any ties to the SoFla community. Golden and crew had no idea what the dynamic was like. At least he's willing to make a move that will help up with the community.

The main problem with Golden is he doesn't win enough games. Going into his fifth year Nick Saban was hiring Alabama guys to fill positions like this to keep his staff at optimal level. Other schools do this as well. All Golden did was replace a connected south Florida guy (Beard) who got promoted and replaced him with another connected South Florida guy. The role is meant for connected members of the community as their job description details them to work with high school coaches, recruits and families. I'm not sure the type of candidate you were expecting Golden to hire. This is not a job where a vast amount of experience working in similiar positions is required. This is a great hire imo.

As for the italicized, Golden was lacking in both areas. Now it's clear he's only lacking in the latter.

In any business, when are too many connections/contacts a bad thing.. It appears to be a good hire, but I don't have any insight on recruiting..

This is why people shouldn't post on the Assistant Director of Player Personnel when they have no idea what the role entails.

Considering he is completely different than Kevin Beard who was deemed good enough to be promoted, I don't get it at all. Guy doesn't coach, guy (probably) never played. Why not go for someone more along the lines of Kevin Beard who can be moved up into the DB coaching spot some day for example.

Hopefully this works out, but he is going to be absolutely crucified over this for stuff that is not even related when the record starts to tank next season.

Thats fair. In that light, I guess its a push. Happy for Josh but certainly dont see it as a significant event for UM.

If we suck next year, crucifying the assistant director of player personnel is going to be the last thing on our minds.
