We beat the brakes off ND. I was there. I'm sure you'll make some argument about how they weren't worthy to be a top 20 team but you can do that with 75% of the top 20 at any given time. The reality is we aren't dropping bags and it will take the staff 5 full recruiting cycles to turn the roster into perennial CFB playoff contender. I just don't see any offensive scheme being able to mask the deficiencies of our OL play and QB play. When we're finally able to control the ball on offense and impose our will i think you'll see the gains on the defensive side of the ball as well.
My main concerns.
OL still needs 2 great classes , and either a new OL coach or a much improved version of Searles.
DB were still way too young behind the starters. This class is important for a good foundation moving forward.
DT Recruiting and Current Depth. Hoping Jess Simpson is really the guru we think he is. I like our recruits but they aren't super heralded guys.
P We have enough problem with TOP on offense we cannot afford to lose TOP and field position.
Recruiting- Knowing when a recruit is BS'n you. Mcfarland, Campbell, Surtain, Jobe etc. Not keeping tabs on Asante Samuel was a big ****up, i think part of that was not knowing Malek Young would get career injured.
My least concerns
*Defensive scheme in general. Diaz surely has room for improvement but again, our offense TOP and punting needs to improve to help the D. I'd like to see us a little more athletic at LB moving forward but i love our aggressive style.
*Offensive recruiting.
*DB coaching (Knowles is obviously the outlier)
Standouts
* TE Recruiting- Land Zipperer in this class and crown Hartley. Mammarelli next year we ***n.
* WR Recruiting- Doesn't need any explanation. Dugans is that dude.
* DE and DB evaulations. Again outside of Knowles this staff really has an eye for evaluating talent.
When we start winning conference titles and major bowl games will start being able to shop for bigger name coaching talent. We just got over the revamped dorm and IPF hump. Our stadium is top notch. We're making serious progress. I get the need to pick apart the staff after a game in which we didn't play well but we're making some serious f'n progress in spite of being a small private school battling colleges with war chest that dwarf ours.
