IMO, Hard Rock has become the modern-day Orange Bowl

It was old out for big games, no one said it wasn't. That said, if the game didn't have big stakes, or the Miami team wasn't all that exciting or relevant, people didn't show up. If you go back and look at the attendance figures, you could easily guess which years UF, FSU or both were home games.

no **** and no one said it was sold out every game. the reply was to "Old heads always talk about how not even during that amazing 2001 season was the OB sold out" and it was sold out plenty that year.

My family has tickets for over 50 years - I went to 55 of the 58 in row of home wins- I have my Orange Bowl seat - that we snapped off the second to last home game - last night when the defense went on the field to stop ND at the end of the game reminded me of the old days - fun night at the Rock.

Living in SoCal has limited my experience in both
But
I was at Miami v Washington 2001 at the OB
And it was INSANE

I was also at Miami V ND 2017 At HardRock
Also insane

But the mystique of the OB is second to none

WEZ of stadium literally rocking and rolling!!!!

Actually not, FSU was a road game that year. UDub and Syracuse were sellouts, but other than that, it was iffy. Keep in mind, the attendance in 2001 averaged around 46k.

OB was magic. Feel bad for the young fans who never experienced this magic. Opposing fans **** in their pants every time the OB was rocking.
Can attest. Went to the '93 Miami-Syracuse (49-0 'Canes) night game when I was a kid with like 15 people from Syracuse was an absolutely terrifying experience for 14 people in the group.

Everything about the orange bowl was magic in the sense of creating intimidation.

The only thing that was beautiful besides the play on the field was the view of downtown from the stands. Depending on your seats, the skyline view was fantastic with everything laid out between.

The vibrancy of the stadium and it's surroundings was magical. You'd more often than not, park in a families yard, make new friends, they'd often offer you some amazing Cuban food, and you'd pay a little extra if an outside spot was tour thing. I went to the same house doe two seasons, made friends, shared drinks before and after it was the best of times in a football environment.

There were no bells and whistles. The place literally would bounce, vibrate, and seem to move. You didn't know the scores of other games, but the announcers would tell you what was going on with other bug matchups on breaks.

Took the rails to get there one time from Palm Beach County and that was a different vibe, but still eventful. No bad seats, very verticle, but nobody ever accused it of being comfortable.

The latest time I was at Hard Rock, it was Joe Robbie. We beat FSU, sterile environment all around. I said I wouldn't be back, but maybe one day with the new changes.

Nobody is wrong for appreciating the upgraded digs, but I'd trade those for the old girl. The new place is far more accommodating to those who want something nicer and more comfortable. Make no mistake though, the old OB atmosphere will never be replicated there. Anyone who has been to both knows thar, but things do change, and that's okay.

I love the old girl. Too bad they couldn't have done some kind of refurbishment to update her. Unfortunately, the city and school couldn't get it done. That time period is over though. Long over. And as much as I love her and the program, the romanticizing of the past is amazing. Was there "mystique" at the OB prior to the early '80's? Plenty of seats available for games against the Temples, Rutgers, and FCS teams of the world back in those days as well.

It is what it is. Put an elite team on the field and I do believe this place can have a "mystique" of its own......without the **** smell.

People talk about stadiums rocking but in the good old days the old girl used to literally rock….you could feel the concrete move under your feet.

There will NEVER be another one like her not in these times when it’s all about how many amenities are available.

Being 7-800 miles away in La. I don’t get to games anymore cause it’s hard to travel at my age and with my wife but HRS looks like it will be a great home field advantage once Mario gets us over the hump and back to respectability year in and year out. I’ve been to the couple of NC games that have been in the Superdome and try to get to the games that are close so hopefully when we get to the CFP this year one of our 3-4 games will be in the Dome.

Miami will support a winner big time but like most all schools attendance isn’t there when the team sucks.Lets hope we never have to worry about half empty stadiums again and it looks like Mario has us on the right track that it will never be a worry again.

so whats the point youre trying to make? thats 2 sellouts so obviously it had games that sold out
No one said that there wasn't a sellout or two, what people ACTUALLY SAID was that contrary to popular belief, attendance was iffy outside of a couple select games. Think about the following: Miami averaged under 50k with a team that spent the ENTIRE SEASON ranked in the Top 5 and was a favorite to win it all...In other words, outside of two games, about a quarter of the stadium was empty...

it was sold out many times. i miss the old girl
Yea in 2001 the only sellout woulda been Washington circa 80k.
2002 BC, FSU and VT were all basically sell outs iirc

Seen 80k+ there many times. Easy to get to, tickets were cheap, etc.. I put a post in the other atmosphere thread about the difference between target demographics and how that has affected atmosphere.

Yes, basically because the OB was mostly exposed steel frame. The erector set stadiums at UCF and FAU are like that too. They can get some serious movement going when people are jumping up and down.

Meh. Minus the DJ, 2017 ND game was much louder than 2025 ND game.

I’m glad u said this, b/c even from watching it in a studio setting, 2017 was much more loud on the surround sound than last night’s game. Honestly, the energy felt a little low & maybe the rain had something to do with it; but, unlike in 2017, I didn’t have to turn down the volume.

It was a great environment and I'd take it any day, but it was not a charged atmosphere by any means. I think the fact that it's game 1, with so many tests in front of us, tempered the attitude of the fans.

That and half the people exhausted from keeping their tailgate tents from blowing away in the pregame Tropical Storm.
