Illinois fires Beckman

This would be a great place for Al to go. He should resign immediately and interview for the position. Illinois isn't really known as a football powerhouse, so going 7-5 or 8-4 every year is seen as a success.

What a crazy decision. Why fire him so close to the start of the season?

This way they don't pay a buyout and he was mistreating players. But the biggest thing is that this year experts are predicting 20-30 college head coaching jobs will become open so if you want a quality coach you will need to start looking as early as possible.

Here is a thread about the Projected College Head Coaching Vacancies

The Rutgers job will probably become open as well given their coaches recent history of academic interference along with poor on field record. AL Golden would be a perfect at RU.

Go Canes

What makes you think they want to be a perrennial 7-5/8-4 program?
Believe it or not, other programs want to win too.

Yeah..you knew it had to be something drastic. No school in their right mind would fire a coach a week before the season starts. That's basically saying you are okay with tanking the season. As much hate for Al as there is on this board, there would be rioting in the streets if Blake James fired him tomorrow and announced that Coley was the interim coach.

I have family in champaign and many relatives that are alumni and lived there for a time, it's more of a basketball school, believe me if a coach could get 7-8 wins consistently the fanbase would be happy, Illinois has always been horrible at football with occassional years when they upset an ohio st like in 2007 the fans dont expect much, many of them are upset that Ron Zook was let go, al golden could fill in nicely there as he still has reputation as a good recruiter whether thats true or not and also he'd be back in the big 10

Fair points.
But everyone wants to win.
A fan base gets a couple of 8 win seasons, they will eventually want 9-10.
Human nature.

Personally i have seen enough of Al to know that he is a lousy coach. I would be more interested in the season if Coley was the head honcho.
