Thought exercise. Your kid is a top recruit. These are his final six. Where are you advising him to go and why? And no changing the rules or adding options here, no “take this one now and then transfer” (I’m onto you, CIS). Just curious what everyone would prioritize for their son.

Team 1 - His favorite childhood team
Team 2 - Biggest NIL by a large margin
Team 3 - Staff with best NFL prep
Team 4 - Best relationship with staff
Team 5 - Yearly title contender
Team 6 - Immediate starting job

1. It’s a business now and you have to maximize your value short-term.
2. You can get top shelf personal trainers to make up for a bad coaching staff if you’re making $.
3. If they’re laying that kind of $ out for you, you’ll be starting at best or rotating at worst.

Team 7. All male cheerleaders. Elko era!
 
He’d be playing in Miami or USC, big cities with endless NIL opportunities. One factor that people used to use as a selling point but it’s really not now..the “college experience” and kids playing in a town that would collapse without the financial benefactor of college football…which is most of them.

Combo of #2/3 (onviously #4 is somewhat-ish as it relates to 2/3).

Everything else is emotional and not long term planning.

It doesn't make the other choices bad, just is.

IF forced to pick just 1 choice, then it's #2 because the margin of all others amongst elite staff is likely very small.
 
The best answer will be more nuanced.

My advice would be to take all offers within 10% of the highest and put them in a pool for consideration.

Then choose the best fit among those. Best fit will be some combination of the other factors depending on the kid's priorities and values.

It is the best case scenario to consider the financial aspects without letting it overrule personal choices.

Well, let’s think a moment. What if “by a large margin” is merely $2000 a year vs every other school offering you $100. A low ranked recruit should go where he can start and price his worth. Then the NIL offers will role in from the portal. A big program may be able to afford $2000 a year for a low ranked recruit, but has him warming the bench.
 
Everyone not saying #2 isn’t being honest. I’d best most of us would leave our jobs in a heartbeat for a modest pay raise, let alone a ‘large margin’ increase.

Should update #2 to be a ‘meaningful’ increase which might give the other options more love

If you offer me no other context then i have to go with #2 because its the only long term guarantee
 
Either Team 3 or Team 6.

Assuming my kid was a high caliber 4/5-star player who's actually good, I would advise him to go to the place where he plays early & gets developed.

The money will come if you're a great player. There will be dozens of opportunities knocking on your door offering you tons of money once you get on the field & show your value.

Question ,. What if you’re best choice is bc that school is 1,..2,..3,.. 5.? Should be easy choice then. If it was my kid, Miami would be it for those reasons and caveat is I’m Alum. Fair question or what?

#2. Unless #1 is Stanford and the gap is less than 10%
 
3 is tempting but the answer has to be 2.

This assumes a duty to provide the most reasonable advice under the circumstances.

Football careers are incredibly short it’s just the name of the game

Get it when you can get it. Set yourself up for life as a young man on someone else’s dime.

If you could guarantee me health then I would go with #3
