If if if on the DC

Yessir.

The entire D, from top to bottom, is fundamentally unsound.

Yes, there are specifics inside specific plays that "explain" why UNC ran for 550 yards, but the 30K foot view of it is this - we play with passion (usually), but we are undisciplined, largely unprepared, fundamentally unsound and often confused (especially in the 1st half).

I don't think I'm being overly negative or unfair. It's absolutely fixable. Manny, if he takes the right moves, could literally turn around our D and the team's fortunes, this offseason. He is the offseason king, afterall. But, he can't do that with Blake still on the dole, unless he takes one of these lower-paid off the field jobs.

Need a new DC, not a one year hold over plan, and at least win the Coastal.
It's more of a discipline and preparation issue. They don't play fundamentally sound football. They rush the qb with no gap discipline. The lbs over run plays and bite on every misdirection play. The safeties miss tackles and are in poor position on passing plays. The corners give up too much space in zone, get beat in man.

The talent is good enough to be good. Alot of it can be fixed with better assistants and better play calling. I think the lb play is the spot we need the most improvement from. It's the least talented spot. I think are corners can be good in a scheme that fits them better.
Hopefully they make the necessary adjustments.

Literally?

The D that Wisconsin raped so bad Richt quit?

Championship D that gave up 24 to Toledo, 27 to each of GT and BC, 20 to Duke. That’s ‘literally a championship caliber d’?

The team that went 7-6 literally had a championship d?

When you O is handing the ball to teams in the redzone, going 3 and out, and providing zero energy to the team... you can have a championship D give up points.

Please reread the conversation. The previous poster suggested, in a joke, that Diaz should resign. I responded there is no way he would walk away from millions like Richt did.
You’re right. No chance he walks away.

So you think that was ‘literally a championship caliber d’, or you’re just repeating truisms for the heck of it?

How the heck would we know when the O and ST sucked so bad? I mean Bama gave up 48 to Ole Miss this year which was 5-5 and they are likely champions. Today's game is more about offense than defense thus it could be good enough so long as the O is championship caliber.

manny either needs to save his friend and take over play calling duties (why not, manny was an AMAZING DC and plenty of head coaches call plays on offesnse) or fire baker, no inbetween
Amazing??? Wtf you smoking.

He was hot and cold - he made good adjustments and was better than the **** we had before him but decent teams had their way with us.

so your position is ‘you don’t know’?

I think Baker's gone. What Manny doesn't want to do is make it official and gave the position vacant while he's still trying to close on a few recruits/transfers. Not gonna make an announcement til he has his guy.

What I don't get is the who and why leaking all this nonsense about Baker being demoted to a position coach. That just makes no sense.

You get it. It would be simple for Diaz to just send out an announcement that Baker will be returning as DC and end the speculation. The fact that he hasn't done so by now indicates to me that you are correct. He's not going to fire Baker until he has the new guy signed, sealed, and delivered. If he can't get one of his targeted DCs, then Baker is back as DC by default. Yes, Baker stinks as a DC, but Diaz can't replace him with Banda now (as I think the last ditch option would have been if Plan A, B, and C fell through). All this demotion stuff is Barry Jackson and others just stirring the pot.

Ohio State gave up 25 to a horrible Penn State team, 27 to an even worse Rutgers team and 35 to Indiana and they’re playing for the title. Alabama gave up 48 to Ole Miss and 46 to UF. They’re also playing for the title. No team shuts down every opponent in 2020.
Exactly. We just need to make teams earn it instead of gifting the yards and points to whichever team is patient enough to take it. Not to mention the big boy teams suddenly look better as the comp rises. We get beat by 500.

My position is that the D wasn't the issue in 2017! My second position is that D is not nearly as important as O.
Neither of those two positions is supportive of the statement 'we literally had a championship caliber defense in 2018', which is the statement I asked for support for. As a result, I'm not sure why you're responding to me.

There is no point in debating it because they didn't make the championship thus weren't championship caliber UNLESS calibar is CFP OR New Years Six. Championship caliber D can vary year to year. They had a top 20 Scoring D which is likely just outside of all past Champions. LSU in 2007, I believe, had the worst scoring D ranking (17) to win the ship giving up almost 20 points per game.

Sounds like we agree that there is no basis to the statements they were ‘literally a championship caliber defense.’.

Soooooo....not the scheme as much as coaches getting the most out of the players?? Richt LB coach was Manny, and we give 56 and 55 a hard time but those guys did they job, didn't Shaq hit right around 80 tackles his Jr year....? So then we go Diaz LB coach is Baker and who inherited 2 Sr LBs who knew the scheme inside out w/o Bakers help, and Shaq goes for around 100 tackles his Sr year....then 1st year Baker has to ACTUALLY coach and develop his LB room our LBs flatline...??? That's Baker more than anyone else on staff, and Manny as HC CANNOT be a position coach as he doesn't have time for that as HC...idk if Rumph couldn't recruit or Banda overruled him or whichever way it went but CB was KILLING us because of lack of competition for snaps...LB killed us because we have a C- LB coach....MAYBE Diaz thinks taking DC responsibilities will help Baker be a good LB coach but I'm not buying it even though it looks like that's what we're all being force fed...
In hindsight people are on Shaq and Pink's nutts. I remember people talking about how slow they were.
