It's more of a discipline and preparation issue. They don't play fundamentally sound football. They rush the qb with no gap discipline. The lbs over run plays and bite on every misdirection play. The safeties miss tackles and are in poor position on passing plays. The corners give up too much space in zone, get beat in man.Yessir.
The entire D, from top to bottom, is fundamentally unsound.
Yes, there are specifics inside specific plays that "explain" why UNC ran for 550 yards, but the 30K foot view of it is this - we play with passion (usually), but we are undisciplined, largely unprepared, fundamentally unsound and often confused (especially in the 1st half).
I don't think I'm being overly negative or unfair. It's absolutely fixable. Manny, if he takes the right moves, could literally turn around our D and the team's fortunes, this offseason. He is the offseason king, afterall. But, he can't do that with Blake still on the dole, unless he takes one of these lower-paid off the field jobs.
Need a new DC, not a one year hold over plan, and at least win the Coastal.
The talent is good enough to be good. Alot of it can be fixed with better assistants and better play calling. I think the lb play is the spot we need the most improvement from. It's the least talented spot. I think are corners can be good in a scheme that fits them better.
Hopefully they make the necessary adjustments.
