what does it mean about the Canes record for the season?

King currently has the fourth(!) best odds to be the #1 overall pick in 2021.

1. Lawrence
2. Fields
3. Sewell
4. King

If King IS the #1 pick, I think that means the Canes went 11-1, won the ACC Championship game, and made the playoffs. Top 5 finish overall. I don't think I could reasonably explain King being taken over Lawrence unless either Miami beats Clemson straight up in the ACC Championship game, or Clemson slips up a couple times and doesn't win the ACC Atlantic Division (so Miami plays another Atlantic team in the ACC Championship).

If King goes number 1 then our entire offense will be top 5-10 in the country and we will likely go 12-0 in the regular season. You should also remember there are two people named Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence who also will be declaring after this season.

You never know what could happen but if he goes 1 then we likely make it to the playoff.

This team could go undefeated and there’s zero chance he goes 1.

Last year at this time, why wouldn't you make that same argument about Joe Burrow? Because I didnt see a top draft pick in the QB we played in 2019. Did you secretly know Ed Orgeron was a championship-caliber coach and Burrow was going to have one of the best years for a QB in CFB history?

Last year Lawrence wasn't draft eligible. If he would have been he would have gone first last draft and the most recent one. And a completely healthy Tua may have gone before Burrow this year.

If the team with the worst record already has a young and promising QB in place, the no-brainer first pick would be Sewell.

It also means that certain players will have to come up with more creative excuses to disregard Miami as they succumb to Enhanced Recruiting. Something like...

"Yeah, Miami won that National Championship...but that's just one year. I needed to see some consistency, and I feel that [insert SEC school] offered that"

"All my love to Lashlee and Diaz, but honestly I just felt more at home in Alabama. That coaching staff exudes warmth!"

"Really, really respect my decision."

Maybe so. But I also saw a nobody named Joe Burrow throw 5 TDs in the national championship game, while Lawrence put up a goose egg. Zero passing TDs. Again- this isnt fanboy TimeB0mb dreaming that King has a great year- this is based on a legit sportsbook that has him 4th. There has to be a reason for that.

Suppose Miami meets Clemson in the ACC championship game (not unreasonable- it's happened before). Greg Rosseau (6th best overall odds) is unblockable. Again- not an outrageous thought given that he's already proven to be a monster. Phillips, Roche, and Rosseau are making Lawrence miserable. Again- not an insane thought. Lashlee's offense is living up to its billing, King throws for 3 TDs and rushes for 2 TDs. Lawrence throws 1 TD (still better than his national championship performance). King matches his 2018 numbers and has thrown 50 TDs by this point in the season (which he did in arguably a conference as good, if not better than the ACC). Miami beats Clemson straight up and makes the playoffs. In that scenario, you still think a 50 TD, ACC championship winning King winning a head to head game against Lawrence still gets picked behind him? That seems to be far more implausible than anything I've written.

Or Rosseau. A game changing DE is pretty valuable nowadays. Since 2000 an OT has been drafted #1 just twice, while a DE has been drafted 4 times.

King has an absolute zero shot to be #1. Jeezus.

In your rush to be a cuckolded defeatist, you missed the premise of the question. If King is the #1 pick, what does that mean for the season? Acommodating your Debbie Downer fandom- if King is picked 4th overall (in line with his odds), what does that mean for the Canes season or will his draft position be independent of the Canes season similar to Goff and Cal's record (they went 8-5 the year he went #1 overall)
