Idk why some of you are so concerned about Nickel as our starter

Why don't we have a true QB coach who can develop QBs? I get the logic of relying on the portal for a known commodity, but the backup is never more than a play away from being the starter.
I'd be making a lame excuse if I tried to make a valid one. All I could guess is maybe at the time of dawsons hire you could still only have so many field coaches. But being 100% honest I'm not sure myself. Seems one of the few failures in my eyes. But that's for another day. Right now is about positivity and picking up #6

So there is no assistant on staff that works with qbs under dawson like with the Dbs you got Jefferson
Yes. But not someone who flat out does that and nothing but that for a living and with a history of having done that. People on the level of a GA & that don't cut it. Top that off that person still needs some version of reps against top tier talent. Not just playing walk ons and third stringers etc. Development comes with action against someone with a pulse...

They aren't going to flat out rip someone on the team but the writing is on the wall.

He's on the shorter side, doesn't have a great arm, and sounds like a gunslinger that puts the ball in harms away a bunch.
Yeah, our latest recruit is much taller. Lol

Go get the OT from Colorado and solidify the OL. Our run game will be elite. Plenty of good WRs. All we need Nickel to do is manage the game and not ***** it up. No one is asking him to be Cam.

Just remember every good college QB had to start once upon a time with zero experience. The sky isn’t falling.
He’s not ready. Dawson needs to develop a QB for once.

No staff has a full time assistant solely training QBs. That why teams have a bevy of GAs, analyst & support staff.

Look at the guys they are recruiting. It’s not like they are bringing in highly touted guys
I know that, and it has to change.
"At some point you need to play your recruited QBs"

That point is when they look good and ready to take over behind the scenes. You guys act like Mario doesnt get to see them every day in practice. Why is this concept so hard to understand for some?

You dont earn a starting QB job at Miami just because "at some point we got to play our recruited QBs".....no you earn it when you fckin earn it. Ball out in practice. When you get a shot in mop up duty, dont underthrow your only pass by 20 yards. Etc.
We won 5 national titles by playing QBs we recruited. Maybe recruit better QBs? Yes, they see the QBs they recruit in practice. You'd THINK they would say, "Hey, we need to recruit this position better." You are not always going to land a portal QB that you want, and you need to have a backup plan. That's the guys you recruited.

So if we don't land a portal QB, what do you think we should do, just say, "Our current QBs aren't so good, so we aren't playing a QB this year"?? No. They will HAVE to play. Thus my point, you will, at some point, have to play a QB you recruited from high school. So, get better QBs from high school.

Recruiting at every other position has been really good, but the most important position on the field needs more attention, at the high school level.

Most QBs suck. I don't understand why anyone expresses surprise when a QB isn't a world beater. The default QB is bad.

I take it from your response youre on the older side.

With all due respect, college football is very different from when we won championships in the 80s. And if you think we aren't going to get a QB in the portal this cycle, prepare to shocked. Why dont you wait a few more days before losing your mind. Youre living in an outdated model of college football.

Won 5 national titles in a bygone era. Game & talent acquisition has changed.

Nickel could be our Sayin. Come up short next season and look avg at times but be poised for a run in 27

Then why recruit QBs out of high school at all, if all we are ever going to play is experienced QBs? At some point you need to play your recruited QBs, or they will stop coming here. "Why would I go to Miami just to sit behind a transfer?" It's going to be a problem. Every other position sees freshmen seeing the field. Miami? You need to be a 5th year senior to be a QB here. It's not sustainable.
This is the dumbest ******* comment that gets repeated ad nauseum in here.

Point out the home grown QBs having success and then compare it to the playoffs the last two years.

Show me those results or STFU.

I'll give you a hint: practically none of the top teams play their "home grown QB". You sound like you're ******* Dabo talking about the portal.

That’s all I’m saying. 95% of these guys are terrible. They aren’t getting anyone fired. The lack of production to lift them up gets people fired

Got to go to a practice mid-season and Nickel was running scout team against our 1s. My observations at the time:
  • He is on the shorter side but is solidly built and can really move
  • He throws a ball that looks different than the other qbs on the roster...the taller guys tend to push their throws a bit, he really spins the ball. When I saw from accross the field I asked the guy hosting me who it was throwing the ball.
  • He was under duress almost every play, which makes sense given that it's scout team players going up against a great defense
No clue if he is capable, but based on what I saw, I would love to see him get a shot.

He's a lottery ticket.

I guess in your mind every single player we ever take is a bonafide starter and we never take guys with some traits and hope they work out. For every Chambliss and Kyler Murray there are 98 other short guys that never pan out.

Coleman is mobile, has a quick release, and a great arm. He's also a midget which is why he was barely rated a 4*.

Nickle is thick, solidly built. Really good job managing offense in high school. Not sure about his command of our offense, but the kid is sharp & gritty. If we’re shut out - sure hope not - he’s probably our best in-house option.
