Identity versus schematics

I said this 4 years ago…everyone’s late to the party I guess. A Heisman finalist at qb is our only. Cristobal is a poor mans Kirk Ferentz at best
I shredded Mario for the Gattis hire and the scheme but Dawson showed alot his first couple years. Even under Tvd in year one . It seems like the more this team gets built to what Mario what’s the more tighter and condensed we get . Leaning more on their run game . Much more conservative.

I said a few weeks ago that it feels as if Mario cares more about winning with the identity he wanted versus out scheming teams and scoring points . He wants to beat you up physically over being creative or being a move ahead of the defense. Which is the opposite of playing offensive football. Competent coaches want to use their tendencies against you , we actually use our tendencies against ourselves.

The sad thing about all of this is the team is good enough to win the ACC and make a run if healthy. But coaching is the biggest issue . And it’s not all on Dawson and Mario. Our DC does some boneheaded stuff too. Third and three and we’re playing ten yards off. Unlike our coaches opponents jump all over dumb stuff like that. Lastly the officiating wasn’t great but we lost this game more than the refs screwed us. Being undisciplined , sloppy and out coached will always bite ya against inferior teams . Btw that’s another loss as a huge favorite for Mario. It’s amazing how he keeps doing this.

Another wasted season and even worse a waste of money
It feels like Dawson's time to be the scapegoat

I just said this in another post

Mario cares more about winning his way than winning the best way.

What are we doing? You said it weeks ago? It was said 4 years ago and for the most part no one cared. I remember back in Dec. '21 conversations on here. It was said we will lose games we have no business losing because Mario wants to win his way. He hasn't changed. The same guy that got hired is the same guy who lost to SMU. Plenty of people here should wear the Cristobal era around their neck like a ball and chain. A&M people pushed back and kept the school from hiring Mark Stoops. No such heroes at Miami.

There is no such thing as "identity" in sports. Leaving aside sports where you're playing a round robin, or a two-legged format, you coach to win the game you're in.

Every game is separate and it has to be. Coaches need to dispense with "identity."

Our only identity is finding a way to lose, and then inventing new ones, no matter who's in charge.
Yup. For example, against SMU on 1st and 10 Fletcher had 7 carries for 49 yards and Brown had 2 for 18 yards, yet we more often than not chose to do things other than hand them the ball on 1st and 10. If we have to have an identity it should be: we'll do what is working in this game until it stops working.

I believe identity and all programs should have one but it doesn’t mean doing the same insanity over and over . You can have a physical identity while still having creativity. Some of Sabans teams at bama under Sarkisian had tons of creativity and next level route concepts.
All staffs should have an intimate knowledge what their collective units and individual players do well, and poorly. That's always going to establish a general idea of what you're going to try to emphasize and minimize.

But each game is going to present different challenges, and as a season goes on, other staffs will know more and more about you.

Unless you're just so talented that it doesn't matter (which is rare in this sport in 2025), at some point in the season you're going to have to abandon your "identity" and figure out how to win another way.

It doesn't really matter for us, though. We have an identity, which is finding ways to lose.

Dawson tends to be difficult to scheme against early in seasons. For whatever reason, it gets inconsistent as the year goes on.

Mario has it in his thick skull that him and his little buddy have put together this fantastic OLine that can maul people and whenever they need a couple yards their guys will just push the other guys back 4-5 yds.

Problem is no matter how great your OLine is it’s hard to do that when everyone in the stadium knows you’re running through the A or B gap.

Until he gets it through that thick of Cuban Skull that on short yardage you can’t run the same play through the same place that you’ve run the last 7436 times over the last 4 years trying to get a first down.
Every once in a while you need to leak a receiver out or run a jet sweep or anything to make the opposing coach think that you aren’t going to run the same play through the same spot that you’ve run the ball the previous 7436 times…
