But I have rewatched that last play of the title game about 10 times the last 2 days and if Beck puts a tad more mustard on that pass it's a TD and we would talking about back-to-back with #7.

Not sure if it would have been a TD, as the receiver was not looking for the ball.

At worst, it's an incompletion, and we live to fight another down.

Negative. It was the wrong read on that play and Beck knows it. Even if by some miracle Beck makes an insane throw to Marion for a TD. Are you seriously that confident that a 1 point lead would be safe vs that Indiana offense with 42 seconds left?

The right play would have been to hit Toney for the 1st down somewhere inside the 30 with about 45 seconds to go. We should have just continued to move the ball in an attempt to stick the dagger right in Indiana's heart with close to no time remaining.

If Beck hits Fletcher wide the fvck open in the left flat instead of an incompletion to Bauman, we’re 15-20 yards down the field having burned the roughly the same amount of time. Fletcher could have gone out of bounds adding maybe 3 seconds to the play.

Then we don’t have to go for the kill shot. Didn’t need to anyway.

Edit: Was going off memory. I went back and watched the sky cast. I believe it was Brown wide open in the left flat on the short gain to Daniel’s that stayed in bounds and caused the time to continue running. Brown had no one near him for 15 yards and could have gone out of bounds. Couldn’t tell if it was Fletcher or Brown from my seats.

Another issue is leaving too much time on the clock with Indiana only needing a FG if we scored that quickly. Beck should have checked down to Toney who came wide open and would have ran it way down the field. Other than that special teams were a 10 point difference on the scoreboard. 7 for Indiana and 3 less for Miami.

You could also say if Bauman actually put in an effort to block the man that came after the punt block, then we would be looking at a different ball game as well. If Lucas didn't wrongly get ejected from the ole miss game, he would have played the first half and our D may have not given up a TD in that first half. It seemed like it was just Indiana's year unfortunately. Miami was the better team it seemed in terms of talent, Indiana was probably the better coached team. If they weren't the better coached team, it seemed they just didn't make the same mistakes we did at the crucial moments of the game. Miami should have won that game, no doubt.

I wasn’t worried about IU having time to kick a FG.
Their kicker hit the upright on a 35 yarder and sucked balls in pre game and half time warmup.
They would have needed to get to our 20 for a realistic chance of a FG. They would have had maybe 10 seconds left to go from the 25 to our 20.

Anyone that whips the CB that bad (Sharpe just about fell down as Marion ran that route) needs to be waving his arm and calling for the ball, no matter what the playcall said about a primary target.

I spent 40+ years obssessing over FOUR Fiasco Bowls. Stop acting like the 2003 game was so unique. We **** the bed in Arizona too many times.

We rode a 34 game win streak into Tempe and were cheated out of a dynasty. Not to say the PSU loss wasn't also painful but we were right back in the title game the following year. It was 20+ years of Cokerized misery after the Fiasco Bowl.

Well, 86 and 88 still bug the **** out of me just as much as the 03 Fiasco Bowl.

Again, that was merely the FOURTH game in a disastrous and repetitive routine. And three of the four games were arguably for at least a chance at a national championship.

I'm tired of everyone fetishizing what happened after the Fiasco Bowl IV. We won the Big East, the Orange Bowl, and finished #5 the next year. The real irreversible decline took place in 2005 when the Seventh Floor Crew story broke right before the GaTech game, when we were #3 in the country and about to win the ACC in our second year. We then proceeded to lose 2 of the next 3 to finish the year, and then opened 5-6 the next year.

THAT is the death-blow from which we never recovered in the Coker era, the Seventh Floor Crew non-scandal. 2003 and 2005 (through the point where we were 8-1) were pretty good years that are just ignored.
 
Since we're dwelling here, I'm gonna post something in support of Alex Bauman.

I'm interested in seeing what his snap count was for a typical game and for the Natty game. With Lofton out for the Natty game, Im guessing that Bauman ended up playing a lot more snaps than usual. When something like that occurs, it's easy to find that his special teams play would suffer a bit.
