How to Improve the Game Day Experience

Have skill games for high school kids. Blocking sleds on the back of large pick up trucks. Turn it into a competition. What local OL pushes it the farthest the fastest. Jugs machines for skill players. Hotties in white T's in the dunking machine. Track the results week to week, year over year. The kids will love that ****, so will most of the the board. Also, try and tie in the diverse culture that Miami offers. Food, music etc etc...I like the the idea behind this post. Nice work OP.

Go Canes!

I think you are on to something...

Create some type of sought after "must go to atmosphere"...

What about setting aside some portion of parking to a 7-7 flag football tourney for EACH home game. I think the AAU circuit would go for it...maybe even AAU basketball as well...mix it up...

Certainly hotties in thin white tshirts...in dunking booths...fuqn brilliant...like implement TOMORROW brilliant.

Exactly. Make it fun for fans and recruits. We have the space for it. We need to take advantage of it. Make it THE weekend event. It's only 6-7weeks of the year. Since its not on campus there should be some freedom from the PC ***** that have infected campuses all across the country. Partner with Hawaiian Tropic and have bikini contests or something along those lines also. Go big Miami or don't.

Go Canes!

Exactly...show case Miami...make it a must attend event pregame to take advanatge of spill overs into actual attendance. For one weekend, maybe sponsor a 5k race in the morning and partner with UM Health for spinal injury research; run through the stadium as part of the course. That could become an annual event...a tradition. Maybe work with a mud run company (logistics might be tough).

While we are at it, why not just put the entire former staff in stocks and chains? Have villagers pelt them with vegetables at half time? Ring the carrot and win a discount coupon to Publix.

Rough crowd.

That is a good idea. Both current pros and legends. Make them ACCESSIBLE to the everyday fan. Would also be a way to showcase who in the alumni crowd (who are so quick to criticize at times) are trule committed to giving back to UM rather than "this sucks and when I was there" type of twitter rants...

The only way to improve the gameday experience is to move the **** out of that abomination also known as Dolphin Stadium.

build a stadium closer to campus....doesnt have to be coral gables. tropical park is ideal. construct a 50,000 stadium designed for optimum acoustics with the seats right on top of the field. i don't accept that the funds are unobtainable.

With what feasible option?

What other facility currently, or yet to be built (besides Beckham's bowl), is an upgrade over Joe Robbie..err...Sun Life...from cost, infrastructure, and accessibility perspectives?

UM plays in a facility undergoing a $300m upgrade. $300m. That is a massive cost.

we could always wait for David beckham to build his soccer stadium....maybe even give him a loan to increase the capacity to 40,000 and if it looks any good as the newly released model does even though it's small it will be the most extravagant stadium in CFB

A cost that's doing **** for the game day experience. I still rather watch Miami play in Doak, the Swamp or Lane Stadium. That's gives you a real game day atmosphere. Shoot, the FAU game was funner to attend than any game at SLS this year. There is NOTHING that will change the atmosphere in that stadium.

Admit students that are not New Jersey bros & hos for whom Miami was their safety school and are too busy hitting Story to attend games.

Oh and win ******* games.

- Accept that South Florida and LA will never have student bodies that compete in attendance with Bama, UT, Oklahoma, etc...massive public schools in well..Alabama and Oklahoma (except Austin)...South Florida and LA are paradise (to most) and there are to many competing priorities for limited amounts of personal time and funds

USC averaged over 75k at home games this year.
UCLA averaged almost 67k.

Wish Miami was close to that. Of course, it's somewhat understandable as LA is still far bigger and same with both those Universities.

Give out 15k free tickets and some Canes T-Shirts every game to the LL football leagues in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach.

Fill up the stadium and build some loyalty.

Hot chicks in white T-Shirts and cut off jean shorts running through sprinklers is plan B.

Also pretty sure an Al Golden dartboard give-a-way day would put 60k butts in the seats.

As long as they win I don't care if they are playing in the Zaxbys parking lot.

Fellow Fans,

Year after year, we see snarky talking heads bash the attendance at UM games. While not huge numbers, they aren't terrible considering the South Florida environment (LA area programs have similar issues).

So, the question is...

How to improve the game day experience to draw larger paying audiences?

A few things up front:

- Reject the notion "if only the OB were still around"...it was half filled when UM was beating teams 100-0 and economically unsustainable from an infrastructure perspective
- Reject the notion that Joe Robbie..errr...Sun Life is the problem...its a top 5 NFL venue...no college team plays in a "better stadium"...especially after the Euro soccer inspired upgrades being installed now
- Reject an on campus stadium...no room, it will cost an unobtainium amount of $$$, no infrastructure, and Coral Gables will NEVER allow it...
- Accept Beckham's facility might be an option in the future
- Accept that South Florida and LA will never have student bodies that compete in attendance with Bama, UT, Oklahoma, etc...massive public schools in well..Alabama and Oklahoma (except Austin)...South Florida and LA are paradise (to most) and there are to many competing priorities for limited amounts of personal time and funds

Whew...

Ok...with the above in mind, what can UM do to make the game day experience at such a high level that people feel compelled to attend?

- Winning (though not a cure all...much smaller component over time actually)
- Pregame concerts with local bands (like Jerry World?)
- Pregame outdoor movies?
- Better mass transit?
- Better wifi/cell signal (already being installed)?
- Lower prices (unlikely)?

Considering UM is in a hyper-competitive (for disposable income) market, what can really be done to draw more fans?

I don't pretend to have all the answers, but my head right now is thinking rock concert or rock festival kinda of feel...somewhat family friendly but edgy enough to draw the edgy crowd as well...

I applaud the effort, OP, but u said something that can't be ignored...the Canes play at a top 5 NFL venue. You are absolutely correct, and that's also a problem.

Even though the Canes once played at a NFL site, in the OB, the construction of older NFL stadiums vs new(er) NFL stadiums are night and day. Older NFL stadiums were more fan friendly, up close and personal. It made for true home field advantages. (See OB, LA Coliseum, Rose Bowl, Lambeau Field). Newer NFL stadiums are more for the fan experience focusing more on amenities and Club Level seating in an effort to get the next Super Bowl or outside events.

Where we play at is not built for the college experience. Even when I saw the OB w Clemson vs OU, it was packed but hardly a raucous crowd...well at least u couldn't hear them. The seats r still too far away. Make matters worst, those aren't even our team colors. This stadium design were for the Dolphins and hosting a SB only...we were not in the plans no matter how much Shalala, James, and Golden attempted to sale.

Mind u, I haven't been to SLS in about 6 yrs, but last time I was there, it was crap to do in the immediate surrounding areas. That plays a part as well.

SLS is a horrible situation, but I agree, we can make it a little better. The alumni need to be let back on the field. That student section should be emphasized, and of course, show up to the games. But, don't get it twisted, we need out of there. SLS should be our "neutral" site for big rivalry games only. Kinda how UT and OU and other surrounding schools will use Texas Stadium for those super marquee games. But our week to week games need to be at a closer venue and I truly hope we partner w Beckham or the movement of a couple of wealthy fans come to fruition...and if I hit the mega or Power Ball this weekend, pls believe I'm contributing to that cause too.
