How the Canes win Fans/Recruits & return to the the Top 15 in 2020...

Instead of modifying the offense to accommodate a weak O line, maybe start by fixing the O line and the other problems won't be so exacerbated.
This is primarily a recruiting issue.

We don't have the OL horses to fix the problem.... now what?
Well, the thread title said return to the top 15 in 2020. That's 11 months away. Recruit? Portal? Replace coach? Develop the ones we have?

The practical steps to finishing the 2019 season strong to re-light our recruiting and fan base:

  • Priority #1: Bring back the Top 3 defense — Manny has proven he can create monsters on D. He needs to put his HC *** on the line for this primary objective. We lost 5 good horses to the draft this year— but we have a couple future stars in GR and NS
  • Priority #2: Play the GAME TIME QB — I don’t want to hear about film-room/practice-time stars.... We need game time winners who can improvise around our porous OL.
  • Priority #3: Modify the Offense -- to play with weak-link O-Line. We are NOT going to fix the OL this year— there isn’t the talent to do so- ZERO. The QB, RB, TE and WR need to have a game plan that maximizes their strengths and relies less on the OL holding back the rush. Bubble screen them to death, quick swing pass, WR sweeps, quick outs, QB scrambles, Wild-cats (TATE?!)

These adjustments and modifications can help us possibly Win out in 2019. The momentum will win recruits and fans. This will help us launch into 2020.

But let’s be honest— I don’t believe we’ll be able to even SNIFF Clemson’s jockstraps without another 2-3 years of Top 5 recruiting classes and exceptional coaching. But that’s the future— what we need to focus on right now is the present opportunities for IMPROVEMENT.

Go Canes...
Timeframes are irrelevant. We aren't catching Clemson without a significant coaching UPGRAYEDD.

Ok i get your point... i thought you were speaking about this year.

OL and field goals are our biggest weakness that needs shoring up for 2020.

Closely followed by defensive backfield and return game.

Suddenly your response makes a lot more sense.

And I completely agree with your priority list. I'm amazed how many people complain about other things that will be little more than minor issues if we solve these. Including the few on this thread that thik my prioritization of the O line is worth reacting with dumb or disagree. Are there really people who are happy with the performance?

Clemson will mollywop us this year, and yes, I do believe we’ll win out and get to the ACCCG.

But that’s where Clemson will expose that horrible, inexperienced OL and Searles. We may score 7-10, Clemson will break into the high 20’s, only because our Defense will Be top notch by that time.

But our offensive line will suck.

I believe Manny can be a Dabo type of coach within a few years if and only if the BOT forks out the money to hire some better assistant coach's. A head coach cannot do it all himself , i know we spent good money hiring Enos which may or maybe not have been a mistake but some of the other coach's are not up to challenge at this level of football. You have to spent money to make money.

I like your passion and optimism....

But we ain't close to challenging Clemson....

They would do to us what they did to FSU--- 40+ points to our 10-14...

Do you think our 2017 team was light years better than the 2019 team? I don't. Richt is a superior coach to Diaz but I'd take our 2019 QB, TE, and RB corps over the 2017 team. Miami lost its 2 best players, Walton and Richards, to start the season. Then we lost Herndon at the end. Play the ACC championship with a healthy AR82, Walton, and Herndon and I think Miami has a reasonable chance at an upset. End result is probably still a 34-24 win for Clemson, but being 10 points away from Clemson isnt an insurmountable distance to close. I think its easy to get down on the team but Miami has a lot of talent.

Not long ago Miami fans thought we'd never close the gap with FSU. They still have more 5 stars than Clemson if I'm not mistaken. In 2014 Jameis Winston was an all world QB and FSU had a Cane Killer in Dalvin Cook. FSU also had a multiple championship winning HC, we had Al Golden. 30-26 victory for FSU. We blew the lead to gift them the game with 3 min left. Nearly every Miami FSU game comes down to the wire. On paper, the talent disparity between FSU and Miami was larger than the difference between Clemson and Miami.

And yes, our 2014 team had a lot of talent, but nearly all that talent was recruited by a cheesy used car salesman while the NCAA was hanging the death penalty over the school.

South Carolina just beat UGA. You think USCe has anywhere near the talent level of UGA? Georgia has crushed recruiting for 3 straight years.

We don't play Clemson 12 games in a row. Just have to beat them once. UNC showed that Lawrence is not perfect. And has been pointed out, Clemson doesn't have a single O Lineman in the NFL. The Clemson OL wins with scheme. The Miami DL will have several draft picks (and maybe a couple 1st rounders).

Besides, Miami had a shot at making the playoffs in 2017 even WITH a loss to Clemson, but Richt blew that chance with the Pitt loss.

Fair enough, but huge difference between a mid-season conference game (where Georgia plays down to the level of competition at least once a year) and a conference title game with a Playoff berth on the line for a defending national champion.

Same way Pitt got Clemson in the regular season a few years back, South Carolina snuck up on Georgia. It happens. Fromm threw three interceptions on the day, when he hadn't thrown one all year.

Could Miami beat a Clemson in December; sure—the Tigers could have a bad game, the Canes could make plays and it could all come together.

Let's worry about Georgia Tech this week and then leaving the confines of home for road trips to Pittsburgh and Tallahassee before waxing poetic about taking out Clemson, which would require Miami winning out to even sniff that game.

You know what i think would have been successful?

If Richt had stayed and allowed Diaz to keep running Defense and to hire in Enos or a similar caliber OC/QB coach.... Now that kind of coaching top level would have brought us much further along.

Richt's stubborness to keep his son in that critical offensive role not only ruined his HC career but also cost the team tons of recruits in 2018.

I don't know, running this boring 1990's offense that snaps the ball with :05 left on the playclock is pretty exciting.

Im hooked and I'm sure recruits are, too.

I've been wondering how special the 2017 season could have been if kaaya and njoku returned instead of declaring for the draft.

Its an interesting question. The Kaaya vs Rosier debate is similar to the JW vs Perry debate. One is the much better passer, the other is the better athlete who can improvise when a play falls apart.

This isnt a knock on Kaaya, but Rosier's ability to run with the ball stressed defenses a lot. When Kaaya declared I wasn't that disappointed. I thought having a QB who could run for 50-60 yards a game would be a back breaker for defenses. Sure enough, Miami didn't lose until the last regular game of the season.* I don't think we go undefeated the whole season with Kaaya but Njoku would have been a difference maker.

*Btw I blame 95% of the Pitt loss on Richt himself. I read the day before the game that Richt was throwing the team a huge Thanksgiving celebration on Thursday night. I knew we were screwed. It was a cold noon game against a physical Pitt team that had nothing else to play for. We were the bowl game. Miami was looking ahead to Clemson and the players were unfocused after a night of playing grabass. Richt should have had the team starving, mean, and angry.
