How good is Ryan Williams?

People seem to only think of when he played a garbage usf and savanna state but I really can't judge some one off of that crap show of teams

Exactly... Those performances against those weak teams means very little... We'll see what we have come spring... Like I said, Williams has been here for 3 years and we have yet to hear that he was the best qb on the roster... I mean, yea situ king behind 2 of the schools top 3 all time passing qbs play a role but if he was Dorsey(#1 all time in UM history) then he would have started or made some noise... So far this reminds me of the UF's fans hype of Brantley...

Lol Brantley would've been better in a different system but I get what you mean im from ocala so I kinda have a bias

Oh I see... Haha I understand the bias but I have to admit, it seemed like he was overrated... I think he was overhyped... I believe he was the 4th string qb at UF but benefited from 2 transfers(Newtonand Werner I believe number 1juco qb)... I mean, they even modified the offense twice for him but he never took off... That being said, UF's recruiting took a nose dive after 07 with an exception for a few players... So he didn't have much help, but I don't know... I just remember seeing him up as a pressing heisman hopeful and was like "he's been a career back up" haha...

I won't predict he'll be the next Ken Dorsey or Steve Walsh, but from what little we've seen it looks like he'll distribute the ball better and make fewer mistakes than Morris did. If he lives up to that moderate standard and our offensive skill players stay healthy, our offense should be much better.

I have no idea what to expect from Williams this year, but I'm hoping for a non-flashy, yeoman-like approach to moving the ball downfield. Dinks. Dunks. And screens. Although the kid can throw a pretty longer ball (like the one to Waters in the USF game).

Cautiously optimistic?

Williams HAS to be a much smarter QB.

It's not like Golden has made a lot of good game decisions.

We've won games in spite of his decisions. That would include playing Morris.

i think theres a lot to be said for a QB that just doesn't lose the game for us. When you have Duke Johnson and Stacey Coley, not to mention a slew of other NFL prospects at skill positions, I'm looking forward to a QB who moves the chains and doesn't throw it away. I'd like the QB's to be getting rid of the ball faster.

My take on Williams/Morris (from another thread):

I've been a Williams fan since his first practice as a transfer. In 2012, I heard from people close to the team that Williams was miles behind Morris. The same people told me Williams didn't have Miami-caliber talent, which disappointed me. Spring practice was more of the same. Morris was killing it, and Williams was competing with Gray Crow for the backup job.

But something changed over the summer. In August camp, Morris began struggling. Williams actually outplayed him and did so throughout the season in practice. The reason Golden didn't make the change is because he felt Morris was the better player (based on a larger body of work and eye test) and the fact that it takes extreme circumstances to bench a senior QB. The offense wasn't costing us games, and actually played pretty well in the first three losses.

I believe Morris is better than Williams. Based on objective measures like stats (and possibly draft position), the past two years have been the best two-year string of quarterback play since Ken Dorsey.

However, I would not be surprised if Williams has a better year this year than Morris had in 2013. Williams is the kind of guy who works and improves. He improved a ton between his junior year at American Heritage and his senior year at Miramar. Even though he wasn't as good as Geno Smith, he did what Geno could not do at Miramar and won a state title. The offense is very strong around Williams, and the defense won't get worse. If he stays healthy and his weapons stay healthy, I expect us to be a good offensive team.

Those who say Williams "couldn't beat" Morris for the starting job should give their justifications for the assertion. Did you hear this from a coach? Did you hear this from impartial observers of practices? Otherwise, list the empirical basis for the assertion.

For those who have not witnessed practices (albeit, that's not the same as games) there is a limited body of work on one side and a substantial body of work on the other side. And, how many of us who have watched football for years have never seen a player with a limited body of work replace a player who started ahead of him and play better?

And so the best justification offered so far is that Williams only beat weak teams and never beat out the starter? (most amusing was the notion that he also didn't beat out Harris)

So we have a comparison of what happened against what did not happen? And, no mention that Morris' performance against strong teams was less than stellar.

Thus far it appears some have decided Williams < Morris because Morris played ahead of him for two years. How 'bout that third down conversion rate capping off the season! Yeah, man and no interceptions!

If Williams is good enough to hit Coley on the screen, find the TE's and open up the middle some, and win games then we are fine. We aren't a team like Vandy or Northwestern that plays at a talent defecit and can only win when our QB runs all over the place and goes ape****. I feel like Brains needs to be the first quality in a UM quarterback. Dorsey is the model, not to say we can't add some mobility or little things, but we need a guy that won't beat us and can hit our athletes short. Our guys are faster than 9/10 of the teams we play, you don't need to get over the top of everybody to be successful. Coley, Duke, Yearby, Waters are all capable of breaking a game open and I suspect Berrios will be as well, plus we have excellent TE depth. No reason not to control the clock a little more, keep the defense off the field, and idk, maybe actually play football like we want to win.

Agree with this.

My justification is that Morris played in our football games and Williams didn't.
