How did you become a Hurricanes fan?

Yea Penn State which was a huge mistake in hindsight. What happened; i was told by family is that they took him to a strip joint in miami when he came on his last visit. He hated it and it wasnt his speed. Thats why he chose Penn state. He ended up transferring to FAU after one season at Penn. Got injured there and was a career backup for the next 4 seasons. He is now out of football but with a masters degree from Syracuse in hand.

So I grew up near the Orange Bowl. As a kid l would see the stadium lights on and the Goodyear blimp circling above, l could hear the roars.... But sitting in the upper decks on Saturday afternoons back in the early 90’s near the east end zone looking into downtown Miami’s skyline during that 58-0 run.. Will forever be engraved in my soul .. I ***’n love The Miami Hurricanes more then The Heat, The Dolphins, The Marlins, Messi, or Culos grande . No team matters more than the Orange and Green. Favorite game attended ? 2025 Cotton Bowl. Baby.
I waited 23 yrs for some real get back and watching Keontes pick 6 was the sweetest *** OSU moment ever !

First game I ever watched as a kid was 2001, I was 10 years old. Miami vs. FSU.

I didn’t know anything about football, but I knew those guys with the U on their helmets were really good. Started watching every game I could, living in KY sometimes made that difficult in the pre-streaming age. Watched them beat the brakes off Nebraska in the national championship, then cried when they got screwed against OhCryio State that next year. Been patiently waiting for the resurgence ever since, and last year, it finally happened. 🟧🙌🟩
 
Attended the UofM back in the "sun tan u"days with Schnelly and then holy macaroni along came Jim Kelly........if you had breath in your body you had to become a Cane.
It was cool because going back a few years, our U never had any idea what football was....it was an afterthought................then along came our Schnelly who told everyone he would make UM Champions.
Please note: This was in the day when our school was called "UM"...not the "U"...not the "Canes"..it was always referred to as UM....
and then all **** broke loose with Schnelly and his pipe and cowboy boots......been through thick and thin for all these years....passed on my passion to my son, and he became a rabid fan...all day Cane everyday...
 
Miami was always on ABC when I was a kid and started watching them in 2000 and fell in love. Pretty much everyone I grew up with was either an ND or Illinois fan and I hated both schools with a passion. Interesting combination of being from Chicago and being a Miami, Tampa Bay Devil Rays/Rays, and Tampa Bay Lightning fan. I always get **** for it but I don't give a flying ****.

Omg I was on the Miami side and had 3 OSU fans to my left.. talking $ ****. i bull**** you not. After that. The **** look on their faces. I almost ejaculated on myself. 😂

Remember both of them. Ganong more for his strength coach career, if I remember he went to Louisville with Howard. Craig did some coaching in Central Florida, Mount Dora comes to mind.

The 1981 team was one of most talented UM teams that folks hardly know about, especially among our younger fans. The two losses were at no.1 Texas and Mississippi State, both talented teams in their own right, and both losses came at the expense of two phantom holding calls against the Canes (sound familiar?). Schnellenberger was a heckuva coach who was masterful with this team, but some credit goes to his predecessor Lou Saban who recruited a bunch of stars in 1977 and 1978, including Jim Burt, Jim Kelly, Mark Richt, Mark Cooper, David Jefferson, Fred Marion, Lester Williams, Rob Canei, Mark Rush, Larry Brodsky, Tim Flanagan, Scot Nicolas, Bob Nelson, Tony Chickillo, Clem Barbarino, etc. A bunch of highly recruited studs from Florida and North East. Very tough and athletic bunch of players who were recruited by many of the big schools.

I was an impressionable young teenager during the 1970s in Miami and like many of us at the time barely knew much about UM football. Like many of us, we rooted for schools like Oklahoma, Alabama, Nebraska, Ohio State, Georgia and Notre Dame. Some rooted for it but not many except for those who had family with ties to the school. I was one of those who initially rooted for ND because, again, I was impressionable young lad who enjoyed their Sunday morning highlight show narrated by Lindsey Nelson and Paul Hornung. When I later attended Hialeah-Miami Lakes HS and saw many of our talented players, teammates and Head Coach Joe Brodsky, join Lou Saban's staff, alongside Carol City's Jerry Anderson and Killian's Chris Vagotis, who also took some of their players with them, I could no longer root for an outsider program. There was a lot of pride in the local school and then Schnells showed up, fresh from being Shula's OC and one could not help but be astounded when he guaranteed that UM was going to be the USC of the east coast. He was prophetic and I was forever hooked. We still lost some of the local talent to the aforementioned schools, but many of my generation were forever sold.

i've said it in other threads.....that pick 6 is a top 5 Canes play in the programs history. The setting. The team it was against. The get back from the bogus PI call in 2002. The stars truly aligned and that play will be on every Cane highlight real for the rest of time!
 
Mom grew up in Miami, she used to come
To UM to watch Rick Berry play basketball!
She moved to CA where I was born, but her mom and siblings stayed
Had an uncle who was policeman in Coral Gables
Had an aunt who would send me t shirts and hats for bday and christmas
I vaguely remember J Kelly at Miami
I will NEVER forget B Kosar and that game in OB to beat Rozier and Turner Gill and Irving Fryar - I was 13 at the time and already a fan
But that game made me a forever fan!!!!!
Funny story
Next year my best friend and I were watching the Canes v BC w flutie….mom in kitchen when that **** pass was caught
I yelled “I can’t believe that just F Ing happened”!!! First time she heard me
Use F word, needless to say, buddy was sent home and I got grounded 😂😂😂

I cracked up at your Hail Flutie story.
That was a crazy game.
I remember watching that game with my late uncle. After our guys made the final score uncle congratulates me on my guys winning, but it didn't feel right and, of course, we all know what happened.

I first fell in love with college football from across the pond via NASN in early 2000's. captivated by Miami's iconic uniforms and legendary swagger.

Life got in the way, but EA Sports College Football 25 brought me back in.

Didn’t really know what college ball was until I saw the back of his card and boom, became a fan simply because he went to Miami. Enjoyed watching him in the NFL.
