How did you become a Hurricanes fan?

Ha! Born and raised in the County of Dade! It all started when in the late 70’s - early 80’s, they use to send school buses to the local parks and pick us shorties up and take us to the games. My location was Madison Middle (NW 32nd Ave). They sat us way up in the nose bleeds. The stadium was empty in those days so by halftime most of us were down in the lower level watching the game. I was hooked and been a life long fan ever since - never wavered. It was a brilliant strategy by the school and it was the beginning of the inner city Miami kids staying home and playing for the Canes. I’ve since lived all over the country, currently in Dallas, but always a Miami Hurricane.

My parents moved my brothers and I to Florida from Athens Ohio in 1978, in the aftermath of the famous blizzard, when I was just starting middle school. We started following the Canes on their rise to the first title and all three of us are still fans. I had season tickets in the OB for years and used to stop by for some of the grassy parking lot crown shots.

I must admit, I was very bitter when the OB was torn down - not to get off-track, but that was ******* shenanigan's. Voters pass an OB restoration bond and that money just vanishes and goes to the Marlins somehow? Anyhow, to make a long story short, my daughter is a student at UM and my wife and I have had season tickets for the past few years again. Go Canes!
closing the OB was a real punch in the gut, what a home field advantage. always loved scalping tickets, hunting a parking spot for quick access to way
loved that view on Miami skyline as well. also kids's to the city of Miami for putting in a great grass field.
no way hard Rock will ever come close

From the moment I stepped on campus January 1972. Loved the Canes even when we weren’t very good. Was friends with a lot of players in my classes, married housing and of course The Ratt. UM was a smaller community then, but the student body rocked the OB. My son is a die hard Cane and this year we get to introduce a 3rd generation to our Canes fandom. Can’t wait.🙌🏽

Let us know down below:
My dad was a fan and took me as a kid to the Orange Bowl a bunch so it was a no-brainer.

His story is slightly more interesting:
He was in the Navy during Miami's 1st National Championship. On a ship out in the ocean somewhere, he and his bunkmate (who was a big Nebraska fan) were listening to the game call on the radio. In order to take the opposing side of his bunkmate, he decided to root for the hometown Canes (he was born and raised in SoFlo) to make listening to the call more interesting. After they won, he was hooked and became a diehard Canes fan. Raised me and my brother the same.

I am born and raised in PA. My 2 great uncles played football at Miami in the late 70s. I grew up hearing them talk about playing there and my dad would go with my great grandparents to their games. He would tell me stories about going to see them at Miami and traveling with them to away games. That made me a fan instantly. Sadly for most of my life Miami has been a dumpster fire. It doesn’t help that I’ve had to deal with State Penn fans my whole life and I cannot stand them. To me the We Are chant is almost as bad as FSPoo’s War chant. The funny thing is I ended up graduating from there due to the cheap in state tuition. I’d always wear my Miami gear on campus. I may go down as one of the only people to go to Penn State that never wore any Penn State gear. My professor the one day tried to bust my balls about telling me what school I go to. I fired right back and told him you see where I would rather be. I still need to get down to Miami for a home game. I have been lucky enough to watch a basketball game and a few baseball games while down in Miami on trips just have never been able to get down in the fall for football. I am hoping that changes in the next couple of years. My dad and I are starting a new tradition of trying to go to at least one game a year. This year we plan on going to the UNC game.
You gotta spill who your uncles are.

But you lived in Gator Country then, no? Is that what made you decide you wanted to go to school at UM?

Fuuuuuuck yes.

Remember, those were the years when The Gator couldn't even win the SEC. But they suuuuure could talk some arrogant ****.

Back before Florida had more worthless cops, I could make it up to Hogtown in about an hour and 45, taking 441 for some/all of the drive. And, yes, I applied to Florida, it was my safety school (tnat is not a joke).

Didn't get into Harvard (they didn't have needs-blind admissions at the time). Got scholarships to UM and UF. **** The Gator.

Dad took me to my first game August 31, 2002 Miami vs FAMU. I was 11, and seeing all the fans and hype surrounding the team was amazing. The OB was rocking and the team was flying all over the field. I've been a fan ever since then.

Defending national champs. I was at that game as well.

And I should give my story some more detail. In 1979, while I was in the womb in Sunrise, Florida, my father began telling me the lore of the undefeated 1972 Dolphins. After I was born, I was so blessed as to be held in the arms of one Larry Csonka, he held me up to the sun, and my love for the sport of football was complete. (True story, minus the holding me up to the sun part. I have no idea if he did that.)

When I was young, my father worked nights and my mother worked days, so I obviously spent more time with my dad. We watched lots of sports - football, baseball, basketball, golf, NASCAR, pretty much everything except hockey. As I was growing up, the Canes were doing their thing, and my dad got me into them too. When it came time to go to college, I applied to UM early decision and that was it.

Can we get @RVACane in here to create a face swap GIF?

Uncle Craig’s been here before.
He played LB in the 70’s.

Somebody screwed up and signed my admission form. No chance they should have let a bumpkin like me into Miami. Figured they signed all the smart folks and then realized they needed at least one idiot….Presto….ME

With so many applicants, the UM Admissions office occasionally makes mistakes...

Madden and watching NFL. So many stars were Hurricanes growing up.

Plus as a Raider fan from the Bay there was an extremely similar vibe/culture to the history of Miami and the Raiders as like the "bad boy" image dgaf mentality. Like NWA repping the Raiders and 2LiveCrew repping the Canes.

It was more than a vibe.
