How did you become a Hurricanes fan?

It started with Kenny Calhoun, then went to the Hail Flutie Game, but omit the final 15 seconds or so. However it all gelled with the 1986 Canes team with Jerome Brown and Testaverde. It was a true sight to behold. Nothing got me more excited than watching them kick a.ss and talk to the other team while doing it.
I don’t think the young Canes fans understand the extraordinary talent Jerome Brown was. God rest his soul.

Born and raised in Texas.

In 5th grade (early 90's) I liked Miami's green and orange colors and I have been a die hard CANE since. True story lol

Dad grew up in south Florida and went to Dolphins and Hurricanes games all the time. Was at the Gator Flop game. Played high school ball in the late 70s and was recruited to Miami, but went elsewhere when Lou Saban left to Army.

Born and raised in Georgia, but was born a Hurricane fan.

Madden and watching NFL. So many stars were Hurricanes growing up.

Plus as a Raider fan from the Bay there was an extremely similar vibe/culture to the history of Miami and the Raiders as like the "bad boy" image dgaf mentality. Like NWA repping the Raiders and 2LiveCrew repping the Canes.

Grew up in DC area and liked things that upset the establishment, so to speak. That was Georgetown basketball starting in the early 80's and led me to Miami football in the mid-80's. Been a Miami fan ever since and ended up going to UM for grad school.

I only even clicked on this thread to reply "Birth," but saw I'd already been one-upped in the very first reply. Very well played.

Neighbors were a big Notre dame family and I thought they were some ***** *** mother****ers

So I picked the team they hated most

Whenever someone asks me this question I say just watch The U doc and if you were a cool kid in the 80s you were gonna vibe with the Canes

1981, Jim Kelly.
I was a SFLA boy living in Ohio at the time. Had been a Dolphins fan since very early 70’s, but had never paid attention much to college.

Jim Kelly against ND and PSU that year made me a fan and been one since.

I was watching my grandmother's tiny black and white TV one Saturday, and "Miami" was on. The picture had so much static I could hardly tell what was what. Then, they mentioned Florida. I thought, "Who is this Florida team the Miami Dolphins are playing?" It kept going and eventually I saw the U on a helmet, and I thought, "Oh cool! There's ANOTHER Miami team!"

That was September 5, 1981. The game where we hit the 55 yarder to beat them 21-20. Yeah, I was hooked.

I shared a truncated version of this in the "How Did You Find CIS?" thread:

My older brother (@RickDerris) was a lifetime Hurricanes baseball and football fan. He even had a full ride to play baseball (along with one to another "UM" - University of Michigan), but ultimately opted to take a different path.

At the end of 2022 when his health deteriorated and he needed full-time care, I moved him in with me so I could be his care giver.

I did my best to be sure he had access to the things he loved (because no one likes being stuck living with, or being taken care of by, his kid sister) and that included having whatever channels he needed so he could watch CFB.

We spent the 2023 season watching Hurricane football games together. He taught me about the sport (usually while looking at me as though he wondered if our parents were first cousins because my questions probably sounded retarded), the culture, the era of greatness, and the team he loved, etc. He was no fair-weathered fan and had been fully loyal for the previous 36 years.

That last season (for him) wasn't that great (thanks, TVD), but he had high hopes for the 2024 season with a new QB, Cam Ward.
We had planned to go to the opener at UF, but he passed away in May of that year before he got to see the change in the tide to where we are today.

I watched the '24 season by myself and fell in love with the very same team he had, and even more so with the sport of college football itself.

The next season (2025), I bought season tickets. As soon as I got back to my hotel after the ND game, I booked a room for January for the weekend of the National Championship because I knew that's where we'd end the season. I attended every home game, including that National Championship game, and I watched an average of 8 to 10 college football games each week (gotta keep tabs on the competition!).

I wish he could be here to experience where we're headed or to even just watch games with again, but I think of him each game (I still text his old number a picture from my seat before kick-off) and I know he'd be tickled to know that he passed on a fan legacy, and now a love for the sport itself, on to me.

And also I may or may not have sprinkled some of his ashes under seat 22 in row 6 of section 241 at the ND game so he could always be there. Allegedly.

Born and raised in Oklahoma with the Sooners being shoved down my throat. Hated their colors. Grew to hate the Sooner nation. Leaned towards the orange of OSU Cowboys. A coach named Jimmy Johnson created some buzz out here. Same time Schelly had beat Nebraska. I liked Miamis swagger. When JJ went to Miami I followed. Been bleeding Orange and Green every day since then. Moved to South beach in 89 because I had to be closer to my Canes. That was a great era. Made it to the OB once.

Grew up going to games with my family, my father coached baseball at Gulliver and a few of his players played at Miami so we would go to the baseball games as well. Then in high school one of my best friends ended up pitching for Miami baseball as well which is what got me onto grassy. Been a Cane my whole life. @Bretdog is my fat younger brother who is the same.
