Houston oc Applewhite vs FSU 2015

In that Peach Bowl clip, I hate to say it but I see the QB doing that whole clapping thing we all hate. ALthough I have to say at the 21 minute mark or so they have FSU laughably off balance. And converting 3rd downs rather easily. I like the tempo. Don't like some of the calls I'm seeing, but to be fair this was a halfway decent FSU defense they were facing.

And.....even though he's not the coach anymore I'm enjoying the look on Jimbo's face as his team is getting its *** kicked.

What exactly is the problem with the clapping? Aren't you really upset that Richt's plays don't work? This is like when people blamed "check with me" instead of play calling and execution.

If you think Applewhite is a bad hire honestly you should open the hood of your car, insert your head, and let it fall. And then repeat. And again.

This is an offense we’ve been praying for for decades. With a guy that is an experienced playcaller and a good one at that.
The bold part is all I really care about. I've been wanting UM to implement a spread offense since Coker was fired. Applewhite will do that. Maybe he isn't the best in the business but he has a lot of good experience running the exact offense we want to see.

I like the running plays but god **** that's a lot of short passes. Could understand though if it's because Ward looks to be a limited passer/FSU having the better athletes.
Got to get the ball out quick considering the talent of FSU dline

Some of you are under the impression we are hiring these guys to be the head coach. We are not. They will run the offense the boss tells them fits his vision for the program.

Regarding the clapping, it was just an observation I was making, considering that our entire stadium openly mocked our own QB doing that during the last home game. It wasn't something I condoned - I didn't think it was a good look then, and I don't want to see that again if our offense should struggle at any point.

In this game, Applewhite got a bit cute with some trick plays for my liking. Amazingly enough they all worked, but those throws were some real ducks that hung in the air. I went to the trouble to watch all the offensive series for UH in this game......I'm actually more impressed with the guy for scoring that much, and winning that many games with that inaccurate noodle-armed 5'11" 180 pound QB. I'd like to think the guys we have in the QB room are *at least* better than this guy was.

What is encouraging to me about this clip is that Applewhite seems to be getting production out of the offense with what appears to be a pretty bad passing QB. I never watched any Houston but I am not impressed by that QB at all.

Yeah this kid may have even been a converted receiver

Let's be clear about what we're watching in Greg Ward Jr. As a passer he had a QB Rating of 148.8 and completed 67% of his passes. And he also ran for 1108 yards. In 2015 only he and Deshaun Watson passed for over 2,000 yds and ran for over 1,000 yards. He was a very talented QB. He was successful before Herman and Applewhite arrived (2014 stats: 2,000 plus yards passing, 500 plus yards running and a 141.2 QR Rating) though he clearly improved further under their coaching.

The offense that befuddled FSU in that game was dependent on a QB who could both rip up the noles with his legs and torch them in the air. Remove the Greg Ward running element and it's not the same offense. FSU arguable could have handled a pure passer and a rb led rushing attack. The wildcard was Ward's running, which FSU's defensive scheme couldn't account for. And when FSU finally did start scheming to address Ward's running ability, it took defenders away from other parts of the field, which Houston and Ward exploited.

A running QB is a staple of a Tom Herman offense. It certainly was during his Houston years with Ward, when Applewhite was OC. And Ehrlinger's emergence as a legit run/pass threat (esp as the year progressed) played a major part in Texas' improvement this year. It was the case at OSU with JT Barrett (984 yards rushing) and Braxton Miller (1,033 yards rushing). If Applewhite will be running the "Herman offense", then he will need a similar style QB (i.e. D'Eriq King, Houston's QB in 2018). The Herman offense doesn't need a lights-out passer; e.g. a Tua or a Lawrence. But it does need a QB who is a legit running threat, and who can also pass well enough (well enough to take advantage of the more open passing opportunities created by the defense needing to commit defenders to the QB run).

If Applewhite is the guy, that's the offense we'll be watching if he runs the "Herman offense" (which hopefully is the case since it's the only successful offensive style he's ever been associated with). And if he is running that offense, he'll need the type of QB compatible with that scheme; i.e. Greg Ward, D'Eriq King, Sam Ehrlinger, JT Barrett, Braxton Miller, etc. We shouldn't be expecting to see QB's who aren't significant running threats.

True story:

Richt implemented the clapping because it was the only way to hear that sound when we were on offense

worth noting that greg ward started his college career as a qb/wr, started his sophomore year as a full-time wr, then was moved to starting qb in the middle of the year.
