Hiring friends

Only exception--and it would be a rare one--was UM in 1984 when JJ was forced to work with staff from his predecessor.

When Tom Olivadotti, Howard's DC, bailed on Johnson, JJ elevated Howard's DL coach, Bill Trout, to DC.

So, JJ had a combination of his coaches (Butch Davis at DL) and Howard's holdover defensive staff. I think Mike Archer might have been the holdover secondary coach, but I don't remember.

JJ didn't mess with the offense too much. He left it up to Gary Stevens. The offense continued to be seamless and effective.

The defense was a fiasco because of the competing philosophies. Trout wanted to continue to run Olivadotti/Schnellenberger's gap control 5-2. Johnson wanted an attacking 4-3. The result was a disastrous 1984 season.

This is spot on as I remember how they spoke about Jimmy being miserable that 1984 season with Howard’s leftovers. Also most likely the cause for why they blew a 31-0 halftime lead vs Frank Reich’s Maryland squad and the infamous Hail Flutie disaster.

You tend to make friends with people you work with. As long as you keep professional boundaries friendship should not trump performance. You have a bigger obligation to the people paying your salary.

Hiring friends is different when your friend has a good track record and rep. Hiring No D, Thomas Brown and Jon Richt is not that. That's when those people have no accomplishments and are in jobs way bigger than their qualifications only because of their personal relationships.

Just a reminder that there is a difference between hiring friends to be on your coaching staff and hiring coaches that you were on a staff with previously.

So I don’t wanna hear that Manny’s hires are lazy because he happens to know the defensive coordinator and possibly the strength coach. Coaching is all about connections, nobody is ever hired to be on anyone’s staff who doesn’t know the head coach from a prior relationship.

Bull****. We dont need Manny Apologists.

It was a Lazy Hire, but it better work.

As long as he can fire them too then it's a non-issue. As 407 just said, his willingness to immediately rescind the Banda/Patke promotion is a great sign.

True. Time will tell. Not honoring the Banda and Patke promotions was not Rocket Science. They were not Qualified. Firing the Offensive Staff was not Rocket Science either. They all sucked and were tainted by Numbnuts.

The defense better get their sh*t together because they will not have ALL of the Al Golden recruits/players to bail them out. Let that sink in....

Manny has my support, even if I do not initially like his hires. The Florida game will be a good grading scale. And we don't have to win the game for me to know where we are headed.

I couldnt agree more. VERY pivotal difference between cronie coaching, and coaching with colleagues with whom you've chewed dirt.

Well, so far the dirt has been all Louisiana Tech, not LSU, mind you. Might be good dirt but I’m not impressed so far.

TBF it sounds like this Baker guy is Manny's first Banda. But 4 years of doing it on his own merits the promotion that Banda in no way deserved.

I'm thinking about the bigger picture which one of these defensive coaches can go toe to toe with winning in recruiting against Bama, Georgia, LSU, Florida State and Florida. To my knowledge I don't see anyone on this staff that can out duel one of these teams for example for a kid, like Surtain or Tyson Campbell. What defensive staff member do you think has the grit to beat these schools??????????

This. Miami fans are so battered that even fairly routine CEO decisions are trumpeted as savage. Banda and Patke running the defense was borderline reckless. Firing the offensive staff was an obvious move for any coach with any survival instinct. Manny did the right thing, but it was also the obvious thing. The next few days will be the true test of his "savagery." Can he reel in big-gets, true "shots in the arm" as he said? We shall see. Some of the names in the mix surely would be, some of the alternative names will probably go over like a fart in church. Manny seems to be a sharp man, so I do not doubt he understands that his leash will be short, and the nature of his hiring will not support a long grace period if things turn south, especially if his staff is perceived to be amateur-hour. I hope he squares this up, he looks the part for this program, and certainly sounds it.

Miami is clearly not even on the same playing-field as the Bamas of the world when it comes to stocking the cupboard with analytical coaching talent, let alone physical talent, so if the goal is to truly compete with that type of program (not just talk about it as I suspect is the real case), then his hires at every position need to be strategically incisive and force-multipliers. Manny has forgotten more about football than I will ever know, so I trust his judgement until he gives me reason not to.

I don't care if he hires his mom, as long as she produces.

If his "friend" had the 73th ranked defense in the country then I'd be trippin. But so far I can't shoot holes in any of his hires.

You may not care if Manny hires abuelita Diaz but would you care if he hired his Tia Becky Blanco from the bronx

Yep the easy thing to do would have been to keep banda and patke

He knew Baker would make us better and made the call

Awesome job by Manny

And I'm sure it wasn't an easy conversation letting Banda and Patke know he was going with a more experienced signal caller, but it was the right choice and a choice he wasn't afraid to make.

Well...... just find someone that isnt the cancerous Apple****

Agree ☝️ Will be a gauge not a final report card.
