What you have are specific roles and responsibilities that need to be fleshed out in this arrangement and both parties agreeing to said roles and responsibilities. The rest is about professionalism, respect, and trust.

I don't disagree this is somewhat a unique deal. We'll see what happens.

This is why Tom Jurich coming in as AD would be perfect.

Structurally it makes great sense for the long term. Jurich is not a young guy, he's a 3-4 year hire IMO. Bring in Alonzo as Assistant AD to provide immediate support for the football program and to learn under Jurich for 3-4 years so he'll be better equipped to take the reins when Jurich retires.

That's my hope anyway.

So basically you and the Giology guy repeatedly post about this AD issue without one bit of knowledge for how other major athletic departments and professional teams work. Got it.

Not one of the 32 coaches in the NFL wants the job b/c there is a structure in place with a GM who executes on the football side of things and a President who handles business matters. Coaches are going to be turning down the job left and right b/c they are only getting paid $6-8M a year and are saddled with the burden of reporting to a GM-like position whose sole purpose is to give that coach the players, facilities, and resources to win.

True. Never thought about it that way. I forgot we were now an NFL team.

Lane, Mario, and every other candidatemust be salivating at the thought of reporting into a GM 😉 They must be chomping at the bit to do that when the other roles at LSU, USC, UF, likely give them full ownership to do as they please.

But seriously if it does play out with Zo being involved then I’ll wait to see how it plays out. I have my concerns but who knows how much responsibility his role would potentially have.

We know pro coaches are comfortable with it so maybe a CFB coach might be curious to try. But, certainly, it could be a source of contention. I'm not aware of any HC in CFB that isn't responsible (to steal Parcells' line) of picking the ingredients and cooking the meal. I guess you could convince a HC that permitting Zo to be in charge of scouting frees up HC during the season to focus on what actually matters on Saturday. I can't imagine that coaches enjoy texting 17 y/o kids and watching game film of recruits during the season?

He doesn’t have to be in charge.

He creates a system that evaluates more recruits in a deeper way. Head coach still makes the picks, but he gets to do so with way more information.

He doesn’t necessarily have to dictate anything to the ad or head coach. He just runs processes and operations that support them. By not being their boss, he doesn’t have to take responsibility for the head coach’s failures like an ad does.

Nobody blames the recruiting coordinator for a poorly performing head coach. Often the support guys get the benefit of the doubt and people want to keep them even when they run the coach or ad out of town.

Zo could put himself in position to be a long term employee for his beloved alma mater using his experience to help while completely avoiding the risks that comes with the responsibility of a coach or ad.

From what I have been told, Highsmiths role will be strictly overseeing football and will not have the AD title. Jurich is still in the mix for the AD position. As far as how it will all work, I don't know exactly. I would assume that Zo would still answer to the AD.
