high level recruiting vs. portal (it's changed for us)

read this on the 247 fsu site and it got me to thinking ...

we're reaching the point where our portal haul will be whales instead of minnows where as other places can't afford big time prospects as they have so many wholes to fill ... i think that strategy bared fruit this offseason in our ability to get front line guys ... ward, martinez, baron, brown, alston ... i'm sure none of those guys are cheap, but the fact that we have so many others spots covered through elite recruiting we can allocate a large spending number on specific targets

we're in a good spot on the offensive line, defensive end, linebacker, cb, safety, rb, wr ... leaves a good amount of cash to fill holes and chase some front line guys

The best is recruit and develop. No transfers unless needed. Perfect world.

Only thing we can really say for now is that you better be able to adapt quickly. You can have a grand plan but also gonna have to do some things on the fly year to year. With the extra early signing periods and inevitable rule changes it will be even more important to be flexible
 
You still have to evaluate, recruit, and develop guys out of high school.

However, there will be more turnover with players who end up being identified as JAGs. You're not gonna have those guys stay on scholarship for 4 or 5 years.

They will replaced with "depth guys", rotational guys, or starters from the portal who will be able to contribute more.

The uptick in scholarship is already gonna be a game changer, especially when you can take chances on more local 3 stars that tend to blow upe elsewhere. But flexibility/adaptability is the name of the game, **** Saban aced it for a decade+

uptick in taking more gambles ... not sure it changes the NIL/portal game ... the beauty of the situation for high major schools was we can sit back on this 3* guy, let him go to a mid major, they develop his talent, then essentially buy him back ... if you take him now, there's no guarantee he'll get the reps and confidence on your high major squad vs. what he would have surely gotten on that mid major team

The portal is free agency. You win through the draft - recruiting and use free agency - portal to make up for misses , injuries or depth concerns at certain positions. You need both to survive in this new era but bringing in your guys and developing will always be the recipe for consistency. I think 6-8 is a good amount when you have your program rolling.
 
Programs have to engage in both recruiting philosophies to be successful. If you recruit well, and by this recruiting all positions well every year, you are going to have players on roster hitting the portal whether the coaches desire this or not. On the latter case, losing an important player may force the coach to seek a portal replacement. So coaches have to be good at both recruiting/developing hs talent as well as acquiring transfers.
 
Don’t underestimate what @JHallCanes said regarding “inevitable rule changes.” This includes everything from scholarship limits, conference realignment, potential NIL regulation/salary cap to unforeseen on field rule changes that may have an impact on roster construction.

Personally I think the future is super murky. As was stated earlier, being flexible to adapt is key. There is no one “right” way for talent acquisition. It’s some combination/ratio of traditional high school recruiting mixed with portal pick ups. Each season and situation at each school is different. I do think the best teams will get most talent via high school with 6-8 portal guys per year. I’m really curious to see how the dust settles.

it’s like a lot of things where right now the “regulation” is so far behind it’s hilarious

One thing that’s been good for us is especially considering our play on the field, I feel like we’ve done a good job in general of navigating this so far

Some were very slow to adapt and some weren’t able to follow up year two with year one so to speak

Was at a party last night with college baseball coach who is a buddy and known for developing talent. His program is consistently one of the top for getting kids drafted. Two of his top pitchers left for better offers, the two behind them stayed. Those two got drafted.
