Who cares what defense he ran at Houston? Everyone's solution to all of these Offense-first guys is to "bring in a great DC". Why does Herman's defensive philosophy matter at all?
Because it shows a pattern. Most coaches stay with what they know. ESPECIALLY on the other side of the ball. I did a little digging, tho and found that in addition to working under Meyer (an Offensive guy that has seemingly used a 4-3 Def. at every stop), Herman worked under Rhoades at Iowa State. Why is that important? Well, Rhoades was once a DC under Tommy Tubberville (4-3 guy). He also coached under another Offensive minded HC that employed the 4-3, in Mack Brown. But he runs a base 3-4?! How?! That says to me that Herman runs what he believes his team can do better OR what he has the personnel for, to give him a better chance of winning. Smart! I'm starting to like this Herman dude the more I read about him.
