If you’re looking for something tangible, it’s just a (small) crack in the armor that coaches will use to negatively recruit.

How tangible is this? Likely not much, but I’m answering your question. It’s not entirely a twitter trolling situation.

There are coaches, 100.0%, who will tell other recruits Miami can’t even keep their homegrown stars home, something’s wrong, blah blah blah.

It also impacts future recruits. Again, albeit in a very small capacity, but it is a data point. LSU gets **** near every single kid they want from Louisiana. Why? Because it’s drilled into every kid’s head from birth. You’re a baller? You go to Baton Rouge like *waves hand at 500 elite local players*. It’s not realistic to get every single SFL kid we want, but the more we do get, the more kids in future classes see that and it’s hammered home over and over that your best option is to stay home.

Getting this worked up over one kid at the one position we trust our staff to produce is peak CIS. Get ahold of yourselves. We’re more than fine.

But there are actual real-life impacts. They’re just not exactly crippling, like most people here want to portray. Go the **** on to College Station. Enjoy yelling at midnight. We’re just fine over here.

Actual impact and perceivable miss, but one our staff should be able to overcome... especially at OL.

For the record, I said if the staff doesn’t land a top 10 class, the rep would take a hit. Not just MM. Missing on him would just be a lowlight to also not landing a top 10 class. But from what I’m reading, recruiting ranking don’t matter anymore all the sudden? Must have missed that memo.

I do understand for sure it is a hit but as long as we got no cut Nick we good. To me he was a bigger recruit then Russel by 100 miles, MM is elite asf but we can’t force dude. Depending on who we pivot to we shall see if it hurts us, and we got till NSD. If we flip DJ and or Bryant I would not lose sleep over MM. If we also got Brysen Wright I won’t even care bruh, let MM go wear those military uniforms. Asher as well, bring me those monsters and I trust Mario can patch the OL eventually.

The only way we aren't signing a top 10 class would purely be because a couple of the 10 teams ahead of us have substantially more volume than us.
We are currently 9th on the composite with 11 commits (8th by average). Every team ranked ahead of us has between 2-10 more commits than us right now.

Teams I'd be surprised for us to finish higher than: A&M, Ohio St, Texas
Tossup but lean better than us: Oregon, ND
Tossup but lean worse than us: USC, LSU, UGA, TTU, UF*, OU*
Schools we will have a better class than: Michigan, UCLA*, PSU
* = Schools I think will chace volume and for that reason alone could technically finish with more "points" than us.

Thats about the position itself imo. Center is almost always a projection, because most HSs put their best Olineman at OT or at worst OG. There are maybe like 2-3 projected actual centers even in the top 250 recruits.. So the "top" part is kinda meh. And most center recruits are probably closer to the 400-650 range of ranking.

The projected centers we're even after/were after this year I think are Reed Ramsier, Gus Corsair, and Reis Russell. Ramsier plays OT in hs and is ranked 361 nationally / 89.76, Corsair plays OG and is ranked 300 / 90.71, Russell plays OT and is ranked 1000 / 86.50

Last yr centers Idk who the TOP guys would be. We got Woodrow ranked t963 / 87.33, and Sparks t963 / 87.33 lol.

25 we got SJ obviously who ranked 124 / 94.37. But he played Guard in HS at Gorman. Their actual center was Alai Kalaniuvalu who signed with BYU and was ranked 109 / 94.71...

24 idk if our center recruit was Plazz? He played OT in HS, and clearly had build of interior player. He was ranked 738 / 87.61

23 was the Connor Lew year. was what we all thought as the clear top center that year... and he was ranked 499 / 89.03 in the composite! And just looking at all the iOL prospects from 247 the other names I recognize as clear centers are Iapani Laloulu who signed with Oregon and is their starting center. he ranked 344 / 89.89. Dont particularly recognize any other centers...

22 just looking at names and if I recognize any centers, and only Parker Brailsford stands out who Signed with UW and was ranked 522 / 88.26. He transfered to bama and was their starting center and was picked in 5th round this year. ..... actually the interesting thing I notice is in this iOL class it had Armand Membou ranked 502 / 88.37 who was drafted 7th overall, Vega Ioane who was Ravens pick at 14 and ranked 574 / 87.96, Jonah Savaiinaea was was picked 38th by dolphins but was ranked 601 / 87.81, AND jalen Farmer who was drafted in the 4th this year and was ranked 690 / 87.37... That's a pretty monster hit rate for the 21st-31st ranked iOL... LITERALLY only 2 guys ranked ahead of Membou were drafted from what I can see - Emery Jones and Billy Schrauth (3rd and 5th respectively). .... Kinda crazy.

21 was actually a very good center class - Jager Burton was kentuckys starting center and drafted in 5th round. He ranked 139 / 93.87, but he played ot in hs. James Brockermeyer was in this class and he ranked 194 / 92.24, and he was actually a center in HS! This class also had Jackson Powers-Johnson who mario/mirabal signed to Oregon. He ranked 197 / 92.16 and he also actually played center in HS too i think and ended up a 2nd round pick. We got Ryan Rodriguez ranked 406 / 88.93. Jared Wilson signed with UGA and ended up a 3rd rounder. He ranked 450 / 88.56. Pat Coogan was drafted in 6th round and was Indianas starting Center after transfering from ND and ranked 613 / 87.37, But he played OT in HS. And then finally there is Jake Slaughter who was drafted at the end of the 2nd round by the Chargers. He was UFs starting center and ranked 697 / 86.93

2020 - 247 actually had Center rankings specifically. And the top 2 rated centers were rated very highly and played center and were drafted - Van pran 60/ 97.12 and Wypler 108 / 95.23. And then Seth McGlauglin who also went to Ohio st along with Wypler btw ranked 524 / 88.03... The guard rankings were a flop. But there was some good tackles...

Let’s also keep in mind that this is recruiting and NONE of us knows exactly why a recruitment does in a certain direction. That is very different from watching a game and commenting about plays that can be objectively observed.

It's not a money issue. We were ready to pay Matthews top of the market.

It wasn't effort. We recruited him forever as the top priority.

I don't think Cristobal and Mirabal forgot how to recruit offensive tackles, especially after watching Cantwell toss people all spring.

I also don't think it's about playing time. We play freshmen, and even if Matthews played RT (which he does in high school) he could still go Top 10 like Mauigoa and Fano.

So all that leads me to this conclusion: I think the kid just wants to go to Texas A&M. I don't understand it, but I'm not him. These guys are all different. Texas A&M did a better job recruiting him and looks like they'll win this battle. It's a brutal loss for the Canes.

All we can do is take the L and move forward. Consider it the recruiting version of the SMU game. Focus on Olu Olubobola and get it done. Elite offensive tackles are rare, and there is a big drop off to the next group (as we see in the first round of the NFL Draft). This needs to be a position where we continue to spend money on high school talent. Maybe we can flip Matthews back, but that's becoming less common in this era.

I still think we land a Top 5 class. But I also thought we'd get Matthews. So let's see what happens. We've got seven months. Go Canes.

Why not go & Take the more receptive OT from Out of State instead of Matthew

We’d all love a top ranked class. But the “rep” has zero effect on us landing players, winning games, or anything else of importance. So does it really matter if his rep takes a hit?

My guess why he’s not coming is because he sees an easier path to play at AM. All the other stuff is noise.
