Hear reports that we are killing it in the portal....

How you can make an argument about Bailey or Raiola over Mensah is mind boggling.

First, did you actually watch all 3 play last season? I have to assume you saw Bailey get his a*s handed to him by UM
Raiola has been straight garbage every season. An over hyped, over priced mediocre QB who thinks he is special. The best thing that happened to UGA was Raiola switching his commitment to Nebraska. Mensah put up great numbers for Duke. A team coached by Manny Diaz!

Second, what in the world does the price matter? NIL has no salary cap. UM and its NIL partners can spend as much money as they want. Revenue sharing does not impact NIL, so whether UM pays 2 million for a QB or 4 million, it makes no difference. College football is closer to MLB than the NFL. We are the Dodgers. Do you think they sign a less expensive player, or sign the best player? They sign the best because they want to win and they are not stupid.

Third, UM’s spend on Mensah had no impact on on any other position.

So knowing all this, what was the problem in spending more money and getting the best QB available?
I definitely agree that Mensah is better than Bailey or Raiola - easily. But I don't get how spending on him had no impact on any other positions. No matter how rich you are, money is still finite.

I mean look at the positions of need and what we did in the portal.

QB-> Hit (but likely overpriced when Raiola or Bailey would have been much cheaper)
WR -> Hit
LT -> Whiff
DE -> Hit
LB -> Super Whiff (not only did we not get one but lost a contributor in Popo)
TE -> Whiff, although we don't seem to have really tried here so hard to judge
Nickel/DB -> Hit, but sub-optimal

So we will go 4/7 on filing needs with the caveat that at QB we overpaid and at Nickel we didn't get the optimal outcome (Perich would have been much better than Thornton). I think that qualifies as a B grade which all things considered isn't bad given the calendar limitations we had to deal with given the deep playoff run.

I would argue if you get Raiola for ~2 million you don't downgrade much at QB relative to Mensah (remember he played in the BIG, while Mensah played in the weak ACC) you can certainly outbid LSU for Seaton, and arguably have a shot at outbidding UT for Biles and/or maybe Oregon for Perich. Granted we would lose Barkate in the scenario we don't go after Mensah so that is worth something, although I would take Seaton any day over a WR.
You have to be a troll account. Raoila and Bailey couldn’t hold Mensah’s jockstrap.

It doesn’t matter if it impacts other positions. QB is the single most important position if you want to win a title in football.

Mario and Mirabal have proved their mettle as both talent evaluators and developers of OL. If they say we have a line that can compete for a natty and win one, then let’s roll.

I think we’ll end up being fine at TE if Mario lands a good TE coach.

At LB, Toure and Smith should give us a good pair of extremely experienced guys that have made a lot of plays, and played in lots of big games. Toure led the team in tackles and got better and better as the season wore on. Also, Wiley is gonna be a menace.

We still made a huge offer to Seaton. So we still had the money available.
I agree that it’s finite. I just don’t think we under bid on anyone else because of the recruitment of Mensah. But I could be wrong about that.

What is this line of thinking?

QBs always get paid the most. Any player that leaves because the top QB in the portal gets paid is going to be very upset to learn how the NFL works.

Or are you saying spending on him prevented us from acquiring other players at other positions?

Either way, you always get the top QB. No sense in wasting a $30m roster to save $2-5m. Isn't the goal to win championships?
