Has a non coordinator OL guy ever been successful head coach?

So most coaches have previously been either offensive or defensive coordinators or skill positions.

(Andy Reid) only 1 named so far

Mario has no specialty but offensive line. We all know he needs to just be a CEO and recruit but has that ever worked before somewhere?

Honestly I don’t know so I’m curious if anyone can think of a coach winning championships in college or nfl that wasn’t previously a coordinator and was just a position coach.
I'd like to argue that OL is a specialty. Have you seen ours? Lol. No offensive powers could mask that OL when guys are just walking in free. He has to hire a compotent OC and DC. We will be fine IF he does that lol.

Brian Kelly was DC for a DII school for a year if that really counts as experience…
It’s counts he had to game plan. Something Mario hasn’t done and can’t do. This is why he has to nail his coordinator hires more than any other coach in America

Sorry that your butt boi dIAZ still sucks as a DC. Best thing he is good at is cheerleader
PSU was 10-2 with 2 losses to Michigan and OSU...not too shabby. Michigan down 2 at the half and 145 passing for the game. OSU lead at the half and only 98 yards rushing. If we played their schedule we'd have lost more games, their only close game was at Purdue.

Better question is how successful have new HC's been that came into a new job paying 8 mil contract with a 62-61 won/loss record?

There is no archetype for what makes a successful head coach. There are many factors that go into ones success. Being able to call a game on either side of the football is not a pre-requisite at the college level. In the NFL these days, its important to a point for sure. College is about program building. A lot of other stuff involved in the job. Its not just football 24/7/365 like it is in the NFL.

Played 3 decent teams and gave up 31, 41 and 44. Still padding stats against week competition. Gets shlt pushed in every time he plays a team with equal talent or good coaching.

Mario’s title was the co OC for Taggart at Oregon so don’t act like his lack of OC experience disqualifies him from being successful.
