HardRock turf

But...isn't this all better than playing on baseball clay??

The turf doesn't get enough sonlight. It also seems like it's in a constant state of wetness.

rokulika actually nailed a big part of the issue. The stadium updates (overhangs) probably cut down 30-40% of the direct sunlight the turf would normally get each day. That's significant - you want healthy grass, but you also want it to dry out each day so it firms up and the roots really take hold of the soil. In south Florida, the field will continue to stay wet and "loose" until they find a solution.

In Europe, soccer fields don't get a lot of sunlight plus they deal with rain/sleet/snow. Thus why nearly every professional soccer team in Europe uses an artificial light setup to help provide more light for growing and keeping the field dry/firm for gameday. See below for an example from Borrusia Dortmund in Germany:

Also, upon further research, it looks like Green Bay uses this same system at Lambeau Field:

Why stick with real grass? Why not just put in fake turf?

Because the number of injuries with artificial turf skyrockets.

"Comparing the safety of new and improved modern artificial turf fields to grass fields has become a back-and-forth debate over the past few years. Studies have provided evidence supporting and opposing the idea that turf fields are more dangerous than grass fields. According to Justin Shaginaw, an athletic trainer for the US soccer federation, a 2011 study found a higher frequency of ankle injuries on turf for football, soccer, and rugby players. Also, a 2012 study showed that more college football players suffered ACL injuries on turf than on grass. On the other hand, both a 2010 study on college football players and a 2013 study on female college soccer players showed a higher frequency of all injuries on grass than on turf. However, according to John Brenkus in one of his Sport Science videos, recent studies have shown that turf reduces the risk for injury by over 10%, yet turf increases stress on the ACL joint by about 45%. Brenkus even talked about a study covering over 2,600 NFL games, saying players were 67% more likely to sprain their ACL on turf than on grass."

Total injuries are more common on grass. The more serious injuries, ankle and knee occour with greater frequency--a whopping 67% increase of ACL danger according to one study.

They used a system like this last year at Hard Rock. Not sure why they stopped.

The research on injuries attributable to turf vs. natural grass is inconclusive. Here is a good article on the subject:
Grass vs turf: Does it affect injury rate?

Artificial turf has come a long way since the 70's. It's not the Brady Bunch backyard crap that they used back in the day.

There's been one Dolphins game, three Canes games played there since they last laid sod. If it rains again on Saturday, the Dolphins will be playing in another mud pit come Sunday. The combination of excessive rain this time of year and no sun to dry it up means we'll continue to play in slop until they replace it with fake turf.

Turf just sucks. Why don't we just go back to the Big East where everyone played on turf. Oh, that didn't work out. Turf is just a cheap way out. The field was great last year and they should just go back to whatever they did then. You think injuries are bad now. The only way to f up an already debatable stadium is to add turf.

I thought the main reason for no dome is because they did NOT want artifical turf. (Also A/C)

Agreed, but was in our favor second half when it rained. GT couldn't run most of their stuff

I've heard that narrative mentioned a lot and I don't agree with that.

After the first three drives Manny figured out their outside pitch play and they didn't do much at all after that whether there was sun or rain.

In fact, weather should have been to their advantage b/c they run the ball and to our disadvantage with more passing.

The "experts" always say the weather helps the offense b/c they supposedly know where they are going and the defense doesn't.

disagree, yes they are a running team so theoretically you would think it would help them but they are an option team. pouring rain like completely eliminated the threat of a pitch, and the surprise of them throwing a deep pass like they did against knowles.

you're right, manny fixed all problems in the second quarter and we still would have dominated the rest of the game, but there is no doubting that they were thrown off because of the rain

New low on this website as we're watching grass grow, literally.

The field will be crap this weekend. You can't set grass and expect it to hold up in a mere five days or whatever it has been.
