I cringe every time I read CIS when there's a S&C thread, especially from all the armchair strength coaches here.
1. I don't know anything about Felder as I've been out of the industry for a few years now, but the odds are good that he's not great. That's not a knock on him, it's just that most S&C coaches just aren't great anyway. Still, he's probably better than Swasey, which isn't saying much.
2. The desire to have someone from the Moffitt/Cochran coaching tree, like it's some sort of champion bloodline, is dumb and overstated. You guys just like Cochran because he's a hype man who yells a lot and "THAT'S WHAT WE NEED!!!" It's easy to look like the best S&C coach in the country when Julio Jones and Derrick Henry walk in every other day.
3. lol at going to Iceland to get powerlifters / strongman athletes. I also see a lot of requests to get someone who was a Navy SEAL to lead the S&C program. You guys are actually mentally disabled. We want to make better football players, not train them to lift anvils and cars. "Innovative" in the S&C sense doesn't mean what you think it means. I'd much rather have someone who has an emphasis on injury prevention and speed development like Jim Radcliffe over at Oregon, but I digress.
4. What we actually need is someone who practices the principles of exercise science who also can tap into the mentality of pushing through tough training periods. The days of an "old school guy" leading an elite S&C program is outdated and akin to running the Wing-T in today's CFB. I'd like to see someone with a Master's in ExPhys, all the relevant certifications, a good amount of experience, and a history of attending/speaking at national conferences. I don't give a **** how much they bench press, if they don't know what periodization is they can pound sand.
