Grooming the next OC

What I envy about Clemson is that although they have lost an OC recently, and may lose another after this season or next, they always have an "OC in waiting" being groomed to continue the scheme.

Its a very smart move by dabo. for multiple reasons. Helps the kids on the team as they don't need to learn a new offence, helps him focus on improving aspects of the team rather than teaching the basics over again, and helps in recruiting as he can sell kids on being "the next (insert name)" and not have to worry as much about decommits because nothing but the OC name will change.

Enos has job hopped quite a bit and Michigan State his alma mater may fire Coach D at seasons end. He would only be in the running if we have a big season of course. But, looking at the rest of our O staff there does not seem to be anyone capable or qualified to take on the role if he was to leave,

I know some will think I'm getting ahead of myself, but I disagree. I think if you want to sustain success in college football, or in any business really, you need to plan ahead and learn from others who are having success.

I have been thinking the same. its the elephant in the room. especially if the offense really takes off. there was already a rumor that MSU was looking at him for HC next season. this is where those "analyst" jobs come into to play. we should be using one of those spots at least

I Completely agree. It's actually the perfect role for a QB coach to fill, which is why I cringed when I saw he would be pulling double duty. He's obviously qualified and im expecting great things. But a QB coach would get a much more in-depth understanding of the system than any other position coach and allow for a more seamless transition.

We aren't Clemson. No other program has experienced the kind of loyatly and stability they have in recent years.

Can't live in fear.

Well, let's be honest. Our staff was put together in a short amount of time. Eventually we could find an "OC in waiting," but for now, let's be happy we have Alabama's former QB coach as our current QB coach.

You are exactly right! Teams wanting to pick off our coaches means we are back and doing well!
 
I obviously agree with you in principle, but Miami is kind of an unique situation, they literally didn’t have a single coach on the offensive staff until 3 weeks ago, it’s hard to do much big picture thinking when you have to hit the ground running.

Manny had to fire the whole offensive staff, rehire a new one, run around trying to change the image of the program, recruit transfers to plug the holes on the roster and recruit for NSD and start on the 2020 class. I’m hoping he’ll be able to think more about the future once NSD passes, but it’s complicated to think about a succession plan when the whole staff is new.

I don’t believe Manny will be able to do much to correct this situation this season, It would be very unfortunately if Enos left after one year, but after the disaster last year it was the hand it was dealt to Manny.

Maybe the WR coach, because his familiarity with Enos, could take on this role.

If he leaves it means we DID well. Not that we will continue to do so.

Clemson built that program the right way. It’s the reason they have so few people transfer out and they have so few misses in recruiting. They recruit players for their systems and their systems never change.

Do you want to have to go out and find a new OC every couple years? Go through the process over and over? While also needing to find players to fit that new OC’s system? Of course not.

Agree with you. If we have success this year, we should have OC's knocking our door down to coach here whether analysts or dudes from other programs that wise up and coach here. No one at the U yet that is near ready following Enos.
 
Last season was hopefully a wake up call when we actually had a coordinator that was worthy of a head coaching position.

It certainly had been a long time.

It may not matter if Enos does well or not (and I'm certainly hoping he does) if his alma mater comes calling. Sabag has to rebuild his staff virtually every year now, but as has been said, he has "analysts" on staff ready and waiting. With all Manny has had on his plate, just putting the current O staff together was a challenge to say the least. Hopefully, Manny will have the foresight to see the need for coaches in waiting.

You have a valid point, but you have to start somewhere. Clemson didn't just "become" Clemson. If you remember correctly, it wasn't too long ago that their fan base was calling for Dabo's head. They were not that good, average to slightly above average, they couldn't beat South Carolina, Dabo started out 0-5 against the *****, and the fans got restless. Their Athletic Staff held their ground and let him build. Look what it has done for them.

No question we should be happy with the hire and things look great for this season. That doesn’t mean we should overlook the problem we may have down the road

Just hire the best available when time comes and stop with this "in-waiting" nonsense as if this is some "family" business...

... hire and run it like you expect highest performance and results..

We haven't even had Enos for one game let alone an entire season. A bit early to start thinking about allowing him to groom an "OC in waiting", no? I mean, there is the possibility he flops. Or maybe he's aiiight but nothing special? I think if a guy has been with the program for a few years and is doing a great job, you should probably think about bringing in a protege for him. Otherwise, you're getting way too ahead of yourself.
 
This is common within all successful organizations. The great ones mentor and build every one up so that the next man up is groomed and ready to take on any larger roles/opportunities.
