Really good breakdown of MSU defense and their D coaching philosophies. I know it's not UM related but it should be interesting to any college football fan.

I like Chris Brown a lot.

He wrote a book called Smart Football (also the handle he tweets under). He has an entire chapter discussing Bill Belichek's use of both 1 Gap and 2 Gap schemes at the same time. Having Vince Wilfork 1 and one side of the formation 2 Gap and the other side 1 Gap.

In that chapter, he discusses the Jimmy Johnson 4-3 and how it influenced all 4-3 and Cover 2 defenses in the NFL.

Really good read and only like $10 on Amazon.
 
I love this coverage. It's the same coverage da 'ville used in stuffing our ground game with nine in the box and forcing Coley's passing game into a shell when the backers started generating fire. They just did it out of an odd front. Cover 4 with hard corner techniques mixed in with some man-2 and cover-2, and cover-6 is deadly.
 
I'd be interested to see a video of our staff's philosophy. The YouTube clip from that article with Narduzzi sitting down talking about his defense really made what they do super simple, but also extremely effective.

I feel like our staff tries to implement a similar style of play as far as a base coverage (ours being cover 3) that can be run out of our base personnel (our 3-4).

They basically teach the defense in the summer so that way through the season they teach the other teams offense so the players don't have to look at the sidelines to look at the coach for the change of the play it anything like that, so that way the players can change the play for themselves as well as the looks. I find it really smart too where the players know as much about the other teams offense like the coaches do.

I'm a huge fan of the way they play defense, and would be interested in hiring Narduzzi should we fire Golden this year. But my concerns are that (1) Dantonio is a defensive guy, so you don't know for sure whether Narduzzi is actually the goods or just kind of riding Dantonios coattails, and (2) that it took so long for MSU to implement their D.

Overall program philosophy is Dantonios. Power running offense and hard nosed defense. Scheme is all Narduzzi. He developed the scheme when he was at Northern Illinois and Miami(OH), then perfected it at Cincinnati and Michigan State.
 
Man after reading that I'm salivating thinking about what that scheme can do with the athletes we can put on the field for defense. Also I liked the part about playing press being a good athlete is simpler than playing off which is what our D does and that means more time teaching and thinking, rather than reacting which is something I think we need to start doing. Count me in for Narduzzi being the next coach of Miami if/when Golden gets fired
 
The other reason is more practical: Eschewing conventional wisdom, Dantonio and Narduzzi sincerely believe it’s easier to play press coverage on the wide receiver than to play off of him. Against press, a receiver has fewer routes he can run, and must declare right away which ones he’s running as he releases inside or outside at the snap. Against soft coverage, however, a receiver has the freedom to run any route he wants without giving clues to the defense. Thus, it actually “takes a better player to play off the receiver than in press coverage,”

But for years we've heard playing 7 yards off in 'safer'...
