Great insight on Simpson

Many on this board have argued that Simpson is just trying to climb the coaching ranks and will be looking to get back to the NFL. I beg the differ. His mentor that he coached with and worked for, stated that when Simpson was with the Falcon's, "he missed molding young players." He also referenced that the NFL is about football and added that "Simpson is about more than football."

Some coaches just love being at the high school or college level. The Lakers threw crazy $ at Coach K but it didn't work. The same can be said for Bob Stoops, Bill Snyder, Bill Self, Roy Williams and many more. The Pro's kept trying to poach them away from the college world. I imagine that the competitive nature that it takes to be as successful as these coaches have been, makes them want to compete at the highest of levels in their profession, which is the NFL, NBA, etc. However, "Purpose" is bigger than personal aspirations for these type of individuals. Simpson, to me, fits that bill, which it's much like the thinking of our very own Mark Richt.

If Simpson was just coming here to make a name for himself, in efforts to move up the ranks, it would have made since for him to never leave the Falcon's. Dan Quinn is one of the best defensive minds in all of football, the team is located in a state that Simpson is worshipped in, and it has been his home for almost his entire life. He could not have been in a more perfect situation, if the NFL was his ultimate goal.

I just have a feeling that Simpson is going to be a special one for us.

Yep.

It doesn't matter if you're the "best teacher of DL" if there's no one around to teach.

And at the rate he was going, we'd be down to a couple of grad xfers in a couple more years.

No offense intended to Toolaghostski, but that fat lump of **** didn't even bother recruiting. He literally waited for recruits to call him. And when he met with the slightest resistance he'd quit.

A pro position job is a job where you’re being hired to be fired or let go cause your job security depends on the HC and very few of them last more than 4-5 years. You don’t see many long tenured HC in the NFL.Yea it’s a little more money but with zero guarantee.

A CFB coach can stay with a HC at one school for 10-15 + years with decent success. And most times when a HC gets fired he takes most of his good coaches with him to the next job. This isn’t always the case in the NFL.

I find it very hard to believe this guy hasn’t turned down a bunch of CFB jobs along the way with his resume but he stayed at the HS level.Maybe he does just love coaching kids.

Well, Mark seems to intend to continue and expand picking north FL and GA. I’m good with that. Lot of talent up there and it hurts noles, gator, dogs and even Bama some. If we can’t keep them out of our yard might as well pick fruit in theirs while they are down here. I’ll take a top DT for a cb every day. Mark is not JJ so he needs to do it his way. Worse case, he will leave us better than he found us.

I don’t see Simpson as an nfl guy. But those Deep South guys tend to be all ears when a marquee southern school comes calling. I can see him doing a great job here and eventually getting tapped by his alma mater or Georgia.

We’ll deal with that if and when it happens, but I’m glad to have him now.

Thanks, Reg. I don't think there's any question that Simpson will be a great recruiter.

Rick knows him well, and Rick has a tremendous reputation for hiring unknowns who turn out to be monster recruiters. It's one of his biggest gifts as a HC. Look at this list, and I'm sure I'm missing some: T. Brown, McClendon, Garner, Hartley, Dugans, the dude who is still at UGA who is now their best recruiter (McGee???), etc.
This pure facts Chise, I will fully admit I was waiting to see what he can do as a recruiter because I wasn't quite sure what his experience was in that department. Crootin' is a really difficult game when a coach is brand new to it, it's part of the reason why Rumph struggled to recruit his own school because the kids don't look at him like that.

But Richt has a nice track record of bringing up new guys teaching them the ropes, I think he really likes giving younger upcoming coaches a shot because he knows they'll maturate into phenomenal recruiters. The OG's tend to be more headstrong & don't follow protocol, that's why I called him a benevolent Dictator cause he don't want anybody deviating from his philosophy, which is a smart strategy long term.

Agreed. I think your view is a much more realistic scenario than him leaving for the NFL.

Simpson said that being able to be the D-line coach at Miami is absolutely amazing, but being able to do it under Mark Richt was what made it to good to pass up. As these reports continue to surface, we are starting to learn that Richt and Simpson apparently had a long standing relationship already.

The picture is becoming clearer EL. You know **** well Right had established relationships with many of the HS coaches in GA. He had top 10 classes for years and kept the home boys home. As many have stated, this gives CMR an "in" in GA.

Excellent point regarding Richt's ability to find hidden gems and place them on his staff. Likewise, it also gives me confidence when we sign recruits like Jordan Miller, because Richt has elite evaluation skills whether it's players or coaches.
Richt might be an older guy but he’s got that young, aggressive approach to recruiting. Sometimes a better fit can be a better hire than simply a big name.

Kul was a no-brainer hire but I guarantee recruiting was at the top of the list when considering a replacement. Richt is no dummy.

Then he should’ve stayed at mizzou where he could do that **** and get away with it, doesn’t work that way here.
He lost his job at Missouri. New coach didn't want him. When I look at Simpsons resume especially with respect to Richt's history with him I have to wonder if he was offered the job originally after Rocker decided to stay with the Dogs before he offered Kul.

Nice thread, reg.

I’m already getting some warm fuzzies from Simpson’s recruiting efforts with Bogle. I get the sense he comes across as a down to earth and sincere guy. Kul was a good line tactician and teacher, but a too cool for school type of recruiter and it hurt the program.

With all were hearing about this new hire,.. Kind of makes the DJ transfer a bit more bothersome...
And the early departures for the NFL EVEN more so....sounds like this guy just really, really likes coaching up his students!!
