Why the Air Raid? For its simplicity more than anything else, Helton says. The root of the Trojans’ woes last year, particularly a season-ending three-game losing streak, was discipline and focus—turnovers, penalties, etc., Helton contends. “We had got so scheme oriented that we weren’t as good fundamentally.” Harrell’s offense contains a total of 12 pass concepts, and his playcalls are sometimes a single word in length. The thick pro-style playbook USC operated under last season—quarterback JT Daniels calls it an “encyclopedia”—included playcalls like “I-right G-short A-42-Tom Y-Shallow-X-in,” Helton says. And now? “We’ve gone from that to ‘Cross.’” It took Harrell just three days to install his offense this past spring. Now, the focus is perfecting it with repetition.
People hear Air Raid and they think five wide receivers, no tight ends, 60 pass attempts and 50 points a game. To Harrell, the Air Raid is something else. It is working to death a small number of plays, with shorter playcalls, perfecting those plays and out-executing—not out-scheming—the opponent. Option-based coaches, like former Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, operate under similar mentalities, but with a different focus: rushing the football. Leach does it through the air. “You can’t do everything. I think a lot of people try to take a little bit of everything offensively,” Harrell says. “If you do that, you don’t have much of an identity. You’re just O.K. at everything and not really good at something.”
Fink has been in the program 4 years and has seen some game action. Had a pretty good offer list coming out of high school as well. Let's not make like they are finding QB's on the street. But he’s doing this with his third string QB who you have to believe has had nothing but limited reps through the summer and fall. It’s impressive
Our numbers are vastly inflated by the Bethune Cookman game.Yeah USC is really killing it under him. Averaging 33.3 points compared to our 31.3 points. 51st ranked offense compared to our 61st. Guess his system isn't that much easier to learn than Enos.
But he would have been a good hire here right?
Let me know all those air raid teams that won championships? I guess you can count Oklahoma in 2000 but they scored 13 points in the championship game and won because of defense, oh yeah and they didn't play us the best team in the country either. Besides that the air raid is garbage and nobody wins **** with it. If you wanna be Oklahoma State or WSU than run it, if you are Miami you don't.
He was my personal choice too but I'm not totally throwing in the towel on Enos yet. He's shown me that he's smart enough to create some very effective plays. He needs to use that creativity to cover up some of the obvious deficiencies in this offense better though.Full disclosure, I was carrying the torch for this guy big time.
I think he would've killed it here, and he's younger and not so stuck in his ways (like Enos).
If it’s easy for you to install and learn it’s also easy for the defensive coordinators youre going again to scheme against it.
They played Fresno State (1-2) Stanford (1-3) and Byu (2-2) that barely beat Tennessee in OT. They haven't played anyone good. Utah was missing their 2 best players and isn't good to begin with. Our numbers are vastly inflated by the Bethune Cookman game.
USC scored 30 against Utah. They have played 4 games, scored 30 or more 3 times and 27 once.
Miami has only scored over 30 once, against Bethune Cookman and could only muster 17 against all powerful Central Michigan.
Against FBS competition, USC is averaging 33.25 points per game.
Against FBS competition, Miami is averaging 20.67 points per game.
Oh, USC is also down to their 3rd string quarterback.
Cool story. They've played a much better schedule than Miami has so far. They've also scored at least 27 points in every game. All those bad teams you listed would blow out Central Michigan. They played Fresno State (1-2) Stanford (1-3) and Byu (2-2) that barely beat Tennessee in OT. They haven't played anyone good. Graham Harrell is a joke and a knee jerk hire to save Heltons job. Same as Briles at FSU was for Willie. Its a role of the dice hoping a high octane offense will cover up for how ****** the team is. Too bad he isn't a good oc and the teams still suck.
It's amazing the excuses our fans make for other teams and coaches but it's the same **** they attack ours for.
They played a schedule that has won 4 games. Lol Florida has a better record than those 4 games.Cool story. They've played a much better schedule than Miami has so far. They've also scored at least 27 points in every game. All those bad teams you listed would blow out Central Michigan.
Miami has played 3 FBS teams and hasn't been able to score against any of them. USC scored more on Stanford than Miami did against UNC and CMU combined. And that was with a 3rd string QB. Right now, one team is scoring over 30 a game against actual teams and one is struggling to score on a MAC team that was 1-11 last year. I'll take actually scoring on offense over getting demolished by a MAC defense every time. They played a schedule that has won 4 games. Lol Florida has a better record than those 4 games.
Lol. So it doesn't matter that those teams have won 4 games total in 4 weeks?Miami has played 3 FBS teams and hasn't been able to score against any of them. Do they even do this anymore? We did them in the sixties.I'm more in favor of a panty raid
They'd have more wins if USC hadn't beaten them. You know, like Florida and UNC would have less wins if Miami had actually beaten them. 33 ppg against actual D1 teams vs. 20 ppg. USC would drop 60 on Central Michigan.Lol. So it doesn't matter that those teams have won 4 games total in 4 weeks?
An old washed up fool. I feel even better about our choice in Enos after reading.
As stated in the thread already, if it's that simple for the O to learn then it's simple for a DC to plan for as well. We literally just tried this philosophy the past 3 years, so wtf.
What we have now is a *much* improved, more intelligent and nuanced view of offensive philosophy. The fact of the matter is in the OP two extremes are discussed, and USC was at one only to knee jerk and swing totally to the other side. An O so complicated the players have extreme difficulty grasping it, and now one so simple the DC can easily plan for it.
Enos said it best, a modern O needs to be simple for the players to grasp but look complex to the D by employing many wrinkles and variations. The challenge for the modern OC like Enos is developing a scheme and system that gets just enough of the benefits of either extreme discussed while blunting most of the associated draw backs. Not the simplest install in the world, but not nearly the hardest either. Not the most vareity in the world, but enough different looks to keep defenses guessing and over thinking.
USC can still win with it ofc in their sorry conference, but no team is ever getting to the top tier level with such a simplistic approach. Go try and out execute Bama or Clemson or Georgia with 4 plays and see what happens.
We're aiming much higher gents and ladies. It'll take more than a year to get there, but we obviously have the most intelligent and hungry staff we've had since Butch himself. Just facts.
You are conveniently leaving Utah’s wins out of your total in your argument? They played a schedule that has won 4 games. Lol Florida has a better record than those 4 games.
The starter also went down early that game and they rolled out a true freshman. They’re even getting production from a third string QB now.Statistically they havent been much better than us at all. And they beat Fresno state by 8. If we beat Fresno st by 8 well look at this week
