Graham Harrell OC Philosophy at USC

I’ll actually like to see that at USC. They’ll kill that conference with that. Sort of like Chip Kelly at UO. I don’t care what anyone says but I could have sworn that UO was only successful because they were like the last conference to go no huddle. I mean, I always thought Rich Rodriguez with Pat White, Steve Slaton and Noel Devine ran that offense at WVU. Or although it wasn’t a NHO Urban Meyer was running a similar offense at UF.

they'll still lose to washington and stanford. chip was successful early on, but defenses caught up to him. hes now trash and worse off bc phil knight isn't doing his recruiting. hes doing marios recruiting now

They should've just asked Urban what he is going to run there next year. Make the transition for the kids a little easier.
The schedule for USC is BRUTAL first 6 games...**** Fresno State 1st game is gonna be tough. No matter what this season if the Trojans don't get 10 wins, Clay is donzo!

I see what you’re saying but I think they’d run away with that conference but lose to an ACC, Big Ten or SEC squad. Outside a couple of seasons Washington’s defense has been good but nothing spectacular and Stanford is a well coached team but doesn’t have the top athletes. But I agree with you. And you’re right about Chip. I felt the PAC 12 was the last conference to catch on to that offense.

What caught my attention in the article was that he doesn't believe scheme is the answer, it is execution. That is exactly what Richt based his offense off of as well.
I am no OC but I believe you need to be multiple. Time will tell on how well this will work at USC but seems to be pretty dumbed down and easy.
The problem with Richt was he wasn't picking plays we were any good at. When people say it's about scheme they mean that you tailor your scheme to the team you have. At least that's what I mean. Richt insisted on asking a mediocre OL to go out and dominate the LOS when he should have been trying to fool the defense. We don't get a lot of OL who can just manhandle the DL so you use scheme to help them out.

An old washed up fool. I feel even better about our choice in Enos after reading.

As stated in the thread already, if it's that simple for the O to learn then it's simple for a DC to plan for as well. We literally just tried this philosophy the past 3 years, so wtf.

What we have now is a *much* improved, more intelligent and nuanced view of offensive philosophy. The fact of the matter is in the OP two extremes are discussed, and USC was at one only to knee jerk and swing totally to the other side. An O so complicated the players have extreme difficulty grasping it, and now one so simple the DC can easily plan for it.

Enos said it best, a modern O needs to be simple for the players to grasp but look complex to the D by employing many wrinkles and variations. The challenge for the modern OC like Enos is developing a scheme and system that gets just enough of the benefits of either extreme discussed while blunting most of the associated draw backs. Not the simplest install in the world, but not nearly the hardest either. Not the most vareity in the world, but enough different looks to keep defenses guessing and over thinking.

USC can still win with it ofc in their sorry conference, but no team is ever getting to the top tier level with such a simplistic approach. Go try and out execute Bama or Clemson or Georgia with 4 plays and see what happens.

We're aiming much higher gents and ladies. It'll take more than a year to get there, but we obviously have the most intelligent and hungry staff we've had since Butch himself. Just facts.

USC:443-YPG/6.41 per play

Miami:420-YPG/6.20 per play

USC a tougher schedule, in fact their schedule is only getting harder.

Why the Air Raid? For its simplicity more than anything else, Helton says. The root of the Trojans’ woes last year, particularly a season-ending three-game losing streak, was discipline and focus—turnovers, penalties, etc., Helton contends. “We had got so scheme oriented that we weren’t as good fundamentally.” Harrell’s offense contains a total of 12 pass concepts, and his playcalls are sometimes a single word in length. The thick pro-style playbook USC operated under last season—quarterback JT Daniels calls it an “encyclopedia”—included playcalls like “I-right G-short A-42-Tom Y-Shallow-X-in,” Helton says. And now? “We’ve gone from that to ‘Cross.’” It took Harrell just three days to install his offense this past spring. Now, the focus is perfecting it with repetition.
People hear Air Raid and they think five wide receivers, no tight ends, 60 pass attempts and 50 points a game. To Harrell, the Air Raid is something else. It is working to death a small number of plays, with shorter playcalls, perfecting those plays and out-executing—not out-scheming—the opponent. Option-based coaches, like former Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, operate under similar mentalities, but with a different focus: rushing the football. Leach does it through the air. “You can’t do everything. I think a lot of people try to take a little bit of everything offensively,” Harrell says. “If you do that, you don’t have much of an identity. You’re just O.K. at everything and not really good at something.”
Touche' I 100 % agree find one thing ,anything and simply do what you do better and moe efficient than anyone else ! IDENTITY,IDENTITY,IDENTITY!
