CORAL GABLES — With a chance to breathe on UM’s bye week, defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio said he’s happy with how his group has played thus far.

“I think we’re top 10 in yards per play right now,” D’Onofrio said. “That’s all we can really go by. It doesn’t guarantee us anything for next week, but if you look at it, we’ve played 500-plus snaps, probably played as many as anyone in the country. We’ve played seven straight games. Give the guys some credit.”

Asked if he understands why external criticism has focused on his defense, D’Onofrio pointed to this: “The seven teams we’ve played are averaging about 450 yards per game, and we’re giving up 325 yards per game. They’re averaging about six yards a play, and we’re giving up four-and-a-half yards per play.

“Does that mean we’re satisfied? No. We could have done things better. But that’s a pretty good sample size. … Can you point to plays? Yeah, absolutely. Can you point to snaps? There’s no question. When you play that many snaps, it’s hard to be perfect. That’s what we shoot for.”

Miami (4-3, 1-2 ACC) visits Virginia Tech on Thursday (8 p.m., ESPN), with another chance to win a big game. UM is 0-3 on the road so far. All the games have come at night on national TV.

“All we can judge is who we’ve played and what we’ve done so far,” D’Onofrio said. “And we’ve played a lot of good teams on offense, and the stats would say right now we’re moving in the right direction.”

he cherry picks one stat and then claims that is all we can go by? Get this man away from our program please.

Why does no one ask the follow up question - "well don't you think you play so many snaps because you play a passive bend and break defense?"

Hahahahahahahaha @ we've played a lot of good teams. Duke, Ark St, FAMU, and Cincy is who he's basing his computated stats on! The Tom Foolery of this staff is incredible.

Picks ONE stat that honestly isn't very telling

Why don't you tell them where we rank in PPG allowed? Turnovers forced. We've played more snaps than anybody in the country bcuz your scheme doesn't allow our players to attack and get off the field

I just know this comment was meant for Al Gluten and broke wristed a$$ Blake James...more so than any of us. And for that, I hope jameis puts 60 on us.

Delusional. There's always some stat he pulls out of his *** to try and support that ****** defense. Now it's yards per play. My eyes don't lie...He, Golden and that defensive scheme suck.

Plays? Snaps? How about entire f***ing games where the Golden/D'Onofrio defense was completely helpless to even remotely slow down one-dimensional attacks from Nebraska or Georgia Tech? Inflating our points per play allowed number against the FAMU's of the world on our Charmin soft schedule doesn't impress anyone who's been paying attention these past four years.

The unacceptable results in points allowed, rushing yards allowed, sacks per game, tackles for loss, turnovers forced, and third down defense matter far more than one cherry-picked statistic to support D'Onofrio's nonsensical narrative.

Previously claims "yards don't matter."

Now he cherry picks a stat about yards per play being all we can go on.

Hey, *******, tell us where we rank in points per game.

Spoiler alert:
We're ******* 60th

The problem with the defense so far has been getting off the field not giving up big chunks of yards.

In reality there are only a handful of defenses out there in college football these days that are truly good. I've watched oklahomas defense today and the last few weeks and they are worse than miami's. No pass rush, can't tackle, can't get off the field.

The name of the game is taking SOMETHING away from the opposition...if they pass for a living make them run and vice versa

The rage inside me just nearly brought me to tears. This guy is a clown.

******* defense costs us two games and now, after back to back years of historically bad defense, the ****** wants to point at some stats.

Get these ******** off my team.

Im more ****ed that this guy is going to get the rest of the season to muck it up for us.....smdh, I just want him gone...

“And we’ve played a lot of good teams on offense, and the stats would say right now we’re moving in the right direction.

The win column says otherwise you boxhead motherflucka.

We are 69 in scoring defense giving up 27.3 PPG and 73 in rushing defense giving up 173 YPG.

Die in a car fire, you *******.
