Glaring Weaknesses

I was having fun with the word scuttling. I don't know which was worse. I don't really care. You can be right on this one. You haven't been a d!ck to me on this thread, so we can just say Go Canes and move on....like grown ups.

Day's penalty was a crock. Technically it was probably targeting, but that penalty sucks. That's my opinion and you can feel free to disagree with me regarding liking targeting penalties. I simply feel like those calls are far too punitive because of the suspension part. I also think that the game in general has shifted too far to benefit the offenses. I don't think we need guys like Jack Tatum sitting back head hunting like he did in the 70's, but I look at the "legal" tackling areas that keep shrinking and wonder how does someone control themselves while moving at 20 mph, trying to tackle a moving target? Throw in that the offensive player can lead with the head and I just don't think it's fair. Again, disagree all you like...I understand the health and safety aspect behind it.
It's all good bud. We should fight with eachother less here. We are all fans and we are really good this year. We should focus more on reminding all the other teams how much they suck

What team on the road to the CFP do you think can do both, stop the run and press man? Genuine question if you've watched any teams that pose this threat? I haven't watched many games this season other than Cane's games.

Road to the CFP? Aka the ACC? Nobody. If we don’t score 30+ in every single game to Charlotte I’ll be really surprised. Nobody should be able to slow down this offense in the ACC.

But the trend has literally been that weve gotten more penalties or penalty yardage than all our opponents. Quite literally every single game this yr we have doubled our opponents in either penalties, penalty yards, or both. That is bad no matter how anyone wants to spin it. **** is relative too. And relative to our opponents and our offensive gameplan/style of no explosive runs, and few explosive passes before this FSU game, it’s having a very negative impact on our Offense.

This yr through 5 games our opponents are averaging 3.4 pen/game to our 7.6 pen/game, and 23 yards/game to our 62.8 yards/game . ******* over 2x the penalties of our opponents and over 2.5x the yards.

Last yr opponents had 5.1 pen/g to our 6.6, and 39.5 yards/g to our 63.5 yards/game… you don’t think that’s bad
Averaging 7.6 penalties per game is nuts. I don't see how it's even up for debate. I mean.. we're 5 games into the season, at what point is it officially an issue? After our 6th game?

Louisville will be a good test for them and our D. They’re both around 230. So it’s a huge drop off against the run and setting the edge having them in for Bain and Mesidor.

Louisville and Moss are our first real downfield vertical passing offense and have had a questionable offensive line. Should see more opportunities for Lightfoot especially and even Pickett
Louisville might have the worst OLine and quarterback combo in the conference we should roll them. Lightfoot hasn’t been bad against the run. Need to see some Artavius Scott too

Shoulda clarified, meant top ranked teams that will most likely be in the playoffs, Oregon, OSU, etc.. Though there are no givens.

Depth isn't merely about numbers, but quality too. Playing two and five snaps does not constitute as depth pieces. Come on man.

FSU ran 83 total plays vs Miami on Saturday. Bain and Mesidor play 77 and 76 of those plays at DE. So, Blount and Lightfoot didn't play their snaps at that position. Lightfood played more of a spy vs Castellanos, and Blount played more on the inside.

For DT, again, FSU ran 83 plays. Moten and Blay played 49 of them. Scott got 31. Like I said earlier, Blount played his snaps at DT this past Saturday.

So, we had two DEs, 4 DTs, and a spy.

defensive line depth is a glaring weakness of this team UNTIL it gets fixed with more guys playing quality snaps within the rotation.
I mean our starting Edges are the top player in the country and another guy playing at a top 10-15 in The country level.

I agree. But 77 out 83 snaps is WILD
I agree. However It's important to note that the entire first 3 quarters there was absolutely ZERO issues with them getting high snaps. FSU had like 1 longer sustained drive in the first 3 quarters and that was their first one. And the DTs were rotating alot - None of them had 50 snaps. The 4th quarter is where we definitely should have gotten more guys rotated in. But really that means Simpson and Pickett specifically. Lightfoot already played like 27 snaps, so yeah in the 4th Especially on FSUs side of The 50 we should have gotten some rotation. But It's also important to say like that 19 play drive or whatever it was, they had a bunch of 3rd and 4th downs. It's not like they were really gashing us or anything. But like they started at the 4, so obviously you want the starters in to start the drive. After they converted the 3rd and then the following 4th down we should have subbed. That 1st down after the 4th down conversion was going to be play 10 and only at FSUs own 43. That was the main drive they failed to sub imo.

There are plenty of concerns. We have them just like all other teams.
This is a really good list. I'd add that the secondary hasn't been tested by a truly above-average passing attack yet either.

Not saying they can't handle it, I just want to see them do it once first.

That’s the only high snap count game. Do you not believe that the remainder of the schedule will allow more rotation like we saw against USF and ND?

Miami was playing its rival and #18 team in the nation, followed by a bye week. #1 offense in the nation playing from behind, how could you take the best pass rushers in the nation off the field? I also think they didn’t want to come off the field. Bain even pushed Blount back to the sidelines when he attempted to sub him out.

There are at least 2 defensible ends (outside of Lightfoot and Blount) on this team capable of playing 10 - 15 productive snaps against any offensive line remaining on the schedule, do you agree?

This is a veteran team, and I can’t see them lacking the mental focus to get through the season. Thanks to COVID, this team has six starters who would normally be out of eligibility. These old men better not fold lol.

I went through the whole last couple drives play by play yesterday. For the people who complained we didn't lean on the OL and backs to try to close the game out, we absolutely did on this drive. We got a hold that totally killed it. For the people saying all we did was turtle, well on the last drive, we threw the ball on 2nd down, and 3rd down, then then again on the 4th down before their last drive.

If literally 1-2 plays go differently for the entire last 20 minutes of the game, we win probably 28-11 or 28-19. Instead, we won by 6. Oh well. But to me, it was the execution, not the overall decisions.
I believe the argument some have made is that Coach was somehow satisfied being up 28-3, and we changed how we played. What's funny is before the drive up 28-3, ESPN highlighted Coach very animatedly imploring the offensive to go finish the game. We were 100% trying to drive the length of the field and remove any doubt.

We ran on the first play because they showed a 5-man box. We ran on the second play because we had 8 blockers to their 7 men in the box. We ran on the third play because it was 3rd & 1 and we have been automatic on those since the early parts of the ND game. All werre successful runs. 4th play we bunched them up motioned CJ across presnap then brought Marion across play side post snap to block outside. We ran Lyle outside to the wide side of the field. We were trying to bust a long run: bunch them up inside presnap then run really wide (which we rarely do). Their 2 deep safeties read the play well and were both in position to make the tackle.

The killer was Lofton's hold. We lost 10 yards of field position there. We lost 15 more on Day's personal foul, regardless of whether it's the correct call or not. That's 1/4 of the field. FSU went from starting the drive around their own 25 yard line to starting it in our territory (where they had barely ever scrimmaged since the first drive of the game).

Despite their great starting field position, our defense still had the upper hand early in their drive. We got a TFL on 1st down. Then, Toure did a fantastic job taking away the screen to Sawchuck on second down and K. Scott was completely free on the blitz. He let Castellanos get outside of him, and the guy made a fantastic throw to a receiver falling down on the sideline. We blitzed Jakobe Thomas on 1st down, he pressured Castellanos and forced an errant throw. Still not seeing any turtling yet. They tried the stupid double reverse pass and threw an incompletion. We lost rush lane integrity on 3rd & 10 cause we were overly aggressive trying to get a sack, and he scrambled for a first down.

Long story short, I don't get how anyone can look at these offensive and defensive sequences up 28-3 and conclude we weren't coaching aggressive and weren't trying to end the game. I didn't like the next offensive series we had at all, but I'm pretty sure the 1st and 2nd down plays were RPOs, and it looked like Carson would have been better off throwing the slant to Daniels on 1st and to Lyle in the flat on 2nd rather than handing the ball off. We punted and pinned successfully. Rushed 5 on 1st down and Toure nearly got a safety while still forcing and incompletion. We again sent 5 on 2nd down, when 2 guys held Bain for the most obvious un-called safety ever, stll forced another incompletion. It's 3rd & 10 and they are at their own 4 yard line. Considering how aggressive Hetherman had been in the 4th to this point, I doubt the plan was for Lucas to concede a 3rd & long conversion to Robinson outside. Like you said, execution not decisions.

That team was not as talented nor did it have the same amount of game experience. (I have made several post showing career snap count the 2025 team is more experienced by a mile)

Would any of those veterans from the 24 secondary even be in the rotation of this team? Who amongst this group are you taking into a road game against a passing team?

Veteran Jaylin Alderman was the first LB off the bench last season he is currently buried on the depth chart.

Talent means everything, being a in your 5th year is not going to save you from being trash.

Whoa! Great post. Veteran team. We have not seen this since 80’s or 90’s.
