Girard Pringle Jr (not hurt) forgotten?

Closest I've seen to Clinton Portis since perhaps Lamar Miller, maybe even since Portis himself.

The kid missed missed one block in a playoff game and was relegated from RB2 to RB3, which I agreed with given that it was the playoffs and Marty Brown had playoff run experience at NDSU.

Coming into this season, I really want to see this kid getting quality touches, not just garbage time touches. Hopefully he's filled out a bit and improved his blocking skills.

Pro-Tip for big fans of Lyle:

Take how you feel about Lyle - apply it to Pringle
Take how you feel about CWH - apply it to Lyle

You have 2 options: Do this now & save yourself the headache, or begrudgingly do it by the end of the year
I was gonna send you the bat signal. I was a Lyle believer but it's just not objectively possible anymore without him proving himself.

Am I onto something about Pringle having perhaps the best vision of our guys? He tends to squirt thru gaps our other guys don't either see or fit thru. There's something he's doing to get to daylight more often. I'll defer to you

It's very Portis-like the way he sees a hole and accelerates through it. Both vision and just plain acceleration/burst. (Pause, Pause)

IMO he and Brown should be co- #2 RBs. You want Brown for short yardage situations. It's misleading to just look at his ypc because we used him so much in those situations.

If Fletch, Brown, and Pringles are healthy, Lyle will have his work cut out to get significant carries. But you need this kind of RB depth because they tend to get beat up more than about any other position. You almost have to go into a season with 3-4 capable backs.

Did he even miss the block? He just got steamrolled by an top 5 freak NFL player, heck our LB steamrolled their freshman RB on blitz, it happens.. Kid his size have roles all over the nation, I turn on NFL and detroit RB is running duo dam near same size back, he should ball out..

Pringle has the best speed on the team and it is functional. He runs north/south as a traditional back. Given the depth on the team, I would use him as another Mali where he plays his true position but also has manufactured touches. Pringle is a good returner as well.

I don't think he actually missed any assignments, he just got run over by a 6'5" 235 LB going top 5 in the NFL draft. We can assume he's been hitting the weight room and working on it like you said.

For those putting Brown ahead.......

Charmar Brown 3.9 YPC
Girard Pringle Jr 6.0 YPC

Pringle is more likely to improve his blocking than Marty is to find another 2 yards per run. Pringle wasn't breaking off 80 yard runs to the outside to get that average. He was right up the A gap just like Marty.

Edit...like @JHallCanes said what happens when Pringle starts breaking a few more of those arm tackles? 7-8 YPC?
Pringle was a freshman last year. If he keeps improving he will be a star and go to the league. But this post underrates Marty. There is a reason he plays most in the biggest games.

Looking forward to competition in camp.

IMO you're 100% right.

- Pringle doesn't win with power/breaking tackles. That's Fletcher & Brown
- Pringle wins with shiftiness/elusiveness + speed. And he's our best RB at both

Pringle was the #1 or #2 RB in 4 of our last 6 games. Expect that % to look the same this year.

Sure - Pringle's pass pro may lose him snaps when facing ELITE pass rushes like Texas A&M or Ohio St (but remember, Pringle was still ahead of Brown in those games).

Against the average ACC team - everyone can relax with the pass pro talk.

It's unfortunate - but Lyle's just an average RB. IMO those arguing otherwise are wasting their time.

If I recall correctly (always kinda scary at my age :) ), he misread which side the blitz was coming. He moved left and the blitz came from the right, kinda thing.

Very good analysis.

I'm both higher on Pringle than most, and lower on Lyle than most. I never saw Jordan Lyle as an elite RB1.

I was higher on Brown during the playoffs last season because of his experience in being RB1 and taking NDSU to the 1AA Natty in 2024. (Yes, it's still 1AA to me - lol) I was "vocal" about that on this site at the time.

My belief is that Pringle has the highest ceiling of any back on the roster, perhaps even more so than Fletcher. My fear is that Pringle will be limited by a desire to spread the non-Fletcher reps among too many others. We'll see...

I think the new RB coach will provide a fresh perspective to the room and everyone will have the chance to prove himself. Fletcher is #1, everything else is up for grabs IMO.

Maybe coaches believing Lyle was good enough to start against ND last year was a mistake and he's always been just average. Maybe Lyle's injuries set him back and maybe he recovers, maybe he doesn't.

As far as Pringle in pass pro, if he can't block well, he should sit. Risking Mensah isn't worth whatever "extra" Pringle brings to the table. We're already more than good enough on offense. And there are still some pretty **** good pass rushers in the ACC.

I’d like to see Pringle take that leap because he would be the lightening to Fletcher’s thunder. Although I’m also rooting for Jordan Lyle to have that chip on his shoulder to prove to everyone he’s still a bell cow back as well. Brown seems to be the guy when we’re inside the 5 yard line because he’s a little more shifty and runs with a lower pad level.

I'm not hating Marty. He made clutch plays that had to be made. It's just a fact he was a 3.9 ypc RB and that's just not good enough. Hope he improves.
But if we need to get a couple yards for a touchdown or crucial first down, he's probably the one to give it to. His average YPC is lower partly because we often gave him the ball in those situations.
